Trying to use FireLite 40GB hard drive on my PC, can find the properties but the disk won't open. Was formarly used on a IMac. Was thinking I would have to reconfigure it for PC. None of the existing files on the drive are needed.

You will need to reformat the drive. it sounds like it was just formatted for MAC only.
to do this open computer management and select disk management under storage. select the firelite drive and click format. please note these are settings for windows 7.

Will a Smartdisk Firelite 120 GB external Hard drive work on both PC and Mac?

Yes. To be used on both it will be best to format it on the PC as the PC and the Mac will be able to read it. But if it is formatted on a mac, the PC will not be able to read it.

Junk it - the controller inside it has failed and the pc no longer recognizes it as a external disk and that is unfixable.

Go to the applications folder and then utilities open Disk Utility in the left box select you firelite and then clcik on the erase tab to your right. You can then select how you are going to format the hard drive standard for using with Mac only machines is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or if you want to use with both PC and Macs is MS-DOS (FAT). PowerBook G4 does not seem to recognize. (Worked well on previous Apple lap top)

If your Firelite SmartDisk was formatted for a PC, and you are using the Mac side of the G4 it won't. They use a different format scheme. Need to load Parallel, bootcamp, or another virtual PC program, and then Windows. Using that it will recognize it.

If you know another Mac user that is using both sides (Mac and Virtual PC) is a quick way to retrieve data to move it. Be careful reformatting the FireLite. There are some more complex ways. Hope that this helps.

PS: I use a 160GB FireLite on my G4, MacBook Pro as well as my Tower and notebook PCs.

Firelite HD 160GB won't mount on PC

Try this site: http://sewelldirect.com/USBManualShareSwitch2To1.asp. Although you must purchase this "splitter", you can use the Hard drive on two different computers. CAREFUL! Make sure that only ONE computer is reading or writing to the same file at a time! If you have a crossover, the hard drive could crash!
