Question about Panasonic Televison & Video

1 Answer

Lamp is shutting off on PT-AX100U projector after 3 minutes. Must cycle power to get it to turn on again, at which time it will stay on for 1-3 minutes and shut off again.

about 400 hours, I have had the projector for 13 months.

  • Mark1000 Oct 24, 2008

Neither the lamp replacement or overheating indicator lights are lit when the lamp turns off. I have cleaned the filter as directed by the manual, and it did not change the behavior.

  • Mark1000 Oct 24, 2008

The unit is also making a strange sound, like some electric motor or servo is running for a moment but cannot actuate something and then stops (kind of an "errrrrrr" sound). It will do this twice before the lamp shuts off. I have not heard it make this noise before I had this problem.

  • Mark1000 Oct 24, 2008

It is the original lamp which I understand to have a projected life of 2000-3000 hours. I have not tried changing it yet because it is an expensive component.

  • Mark1000 Oct 24, 2008

Assuming that the unit has made this sound in the past, and I didn't notice it before, it could be that the lamp element is fractured or somehow opens up due to heating. That makes sense and may be worth a try. Any idea where I could get the best deal on a new lamp?

Hmm a weird buzzing noise. Kinda hard to judge without hearing the noise. Could be a fan seizing up, could be the lamp ballast buzzing before it shuts down. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm thinking you might need professional help on this one.

Did you use an original lamp? What I'm thinking is that the lamp is drawing too much current, which could point to a defective lamp. I have seen perfectly "good" looking lamps have this problem. The alternative is that the lamp ballast, also called the lamp driver has a problem. The reason I asked about the original lamp is that some of the aftermarket lamps have, in my experience, exhibited problems such as shutdown, premature failure and insufficient brightness.

    How old is the lamp?

You can PROBABLY eliminate the lamp as the source of your difficulty then. The buzzing puzzles me, but without being there, I don't reallt have a guess as to what is causing it. Here's one thing you can check, after the lamp has cooled, pull it out and check the lamp socket for any sign of corrosion, arcing carbonization, etc on the socket. Could be that the socket is arcing after the unit heats up. It's a long shot, but worth checking.

I always start with Amazon for lamp pricing, though they aren't always the cheapest. Do your internet search and I would stick with an OEM lamp. There is one aftermarket company selling lamps that I trust and that is OSRAM, they have years of experience in the lighting industry. BTW, if you liked my help, please rate my response. Thanks!

A clarification, check both lamp sockets, the one on the lamp and the one on the projector.

Why does the projector keep going to standby mode?

If the lamp usage time has passed 2 000 hours (when LAMP POWER has been set to NORMAL), the projector will switch to standby mode after approximately 10 minutes of operation. The resetting procedure should thus be completed within 10 minutes.

1. Insert the power cord plug into the wall outlet and then

press the MAIN POWER switch.

2. Press the POWER button so that a picture is projected onto

the screen.

3. Press the MENU button to display the menu screen, and

then press the F or G button to select the OPTION menu.

4. Press the ENTER button, and then press the F or G button

to select LAMP RUNTIME.

5. Press and hold the ENTER button for approximately

3 seconds. The confirmation screen, "LAMP RUNTIME

RESET." is displayed and select OK.

6. Turn off the power.

This will reset the cumulative usage time for the lamp
unit to zero.

What could be wrong with a Panasonic ax100u with a blinking red light? I am told the lamp might be bad. Could it be something more serious?

if the lamp has been used for more than 1500 hours, then it could be a lmp problem.
1.check the lamp physically for melted filament, cracks etc or white deposits on reflector
2.If yes then lamp for sure is defective
3.if the lamp shows no signs as mentined above than it could be the ballast!

Have you tried looking to see if the lamp has expired? Or could simply be cause by a faulty power supply unit?
