To keep the battery active you should charge it once a month during the season you are not using it. Do not leave the radios on the charger for an extended period of time, as this will age the batteries more rapidly.

Best regards.

Left key on for few days battery dead I jumped it off and runs very rough when give it gas gauges go out and backfires

Hi Did you leave the jumper battery hooked up while it was running? It sounds like the dead battery may need to be replaced. Jump it again and leave the jumper battery hooked up and then see if it runs ok. If it does run good you will need to replace the battery. I hope this helps. Rod

Listen to me. Put the jumpers on the car, If you have a second set use them also. Go inside and have a cup of coffee and talk to the Mrs. The point I'm trying to bring out is leave the cables on the car for at least 20-30 minutes. Don't try to start it right away because the cables you have are JUNK as are most jumper cables sold today. Simply give it ample time to charge. Once you get it started, leave it running to further charge the battery.

Battery drains, battery replaced, battery dead 2004 ford F150

Seen this "mystery drain" many times. Check spark at the battery to see how big the drain is. For this simple test, blow away any (explosive) battery charging fumes. Leave one terminal on and gently touch the other to its post in fairly dark surroundings. Then try it again with the wires taken off the alternator. Your spark is now probably much less. Usually bad diodes leaking electricity backwards through the alternator cause this drain. Replace the alternator or the diode pack inside it. Some mechanics recommend actually measuring the drain.... hahaha. OK whatever. But the radio memory and computers/control modules are the only things that should cause a drain. Not the alternator.

My 1999 saturn sl, everytime i go to start my car its dead, i dont leave my lights on or anything, (battery problem) what kind of battery does this model car have?

well the battery could be refusing to take much of a charge, the alternator might not be putting out enough to keep the car running and charge the battery. or there could be something draining the battery, even with the ignition in off position. you can take the battery and alternator into advance or autozone for a test, but the drain problem is going to take some trouble shooting. things which are on even when off can be the remote door locks, remote starter, lights in the glove box and trunk. if you have aftermarket stuff like custom radios, GPS, etc. are usually put in by someone who does not know what they are doing so i would start there.

My mercedes sat for 10 months while I recuperated from injuries. The battery was completely dead. Remote didn't even work. We were able to jumpstart it with battery cables but it won't keep running. Dead...

You will burn out your alternator if you keep on doing this. The alternator is not a charger. If you have a dead battery you should always charge it overnight on a charger. To keep the battery fresh all that you have to do is disconnect the terminals.Yes this is normal because the car has clocks and alarms that drain power even when the key is off. If you let the battery set to long while it is drained it will not take a charge.

2007 Vue hybrid. 12-volt battery dead? No electric key opening, lights, starting, etc. Can I try to trickle charge it? We;ve been away a week, but it has been sitting in a garage above 50 degrees.

If the battery is completely dead a trickle charge won't do much. These are designed to keep a good battery good. You need a regular battery charger set to 10 amps for a couple hours then 2 amps overnight. Be aware that sometimes if your battery has been completely killed it may not work for long, that is your car will start but within a few days or hours it will leave you stranded. You'll know because it will drag when you try to start it. Sometimes you get lucky and it works great for years.

Next time do use a trickle charger! Also if the charge you use is automatic then you can leave it hooked up in 2 amp mode when you are gone. Good luck!
