Hi. You surely know there has volume up key. If you turn it to maximum volume and still cant hear clearly, you may turn on hands free mode. There has an extreme way to do it under engineering mode, but wrong operation may brick your phone. So, if options above cant solve your problem, you'd better ask help from after-sale service. Yes you are very correct. Its a earpiece problem. I use to have a Sony Ericsson K750i and the earpiece is not loud at all, so when I changed the earpiece, it began to work perfectly again. So I'll support or advice that you change the earpiece.
first try to clean the two microphone holes with a thombnail / if you can open the phone and clean it if you cant just clean it from outside
if you still have the same problem call your provider and let them refresh your account
ifthe problem still there your speaker ned to be changed
