SOURCE: system creeps down even when tractor is operating.

There are 2 potential problems -
1. Leaking spool on the control valve - rebuild the vale.

2. Cylinder blow-by. Disassemble piston and replace the seals.

To test if its the cylinder - retract the cylinders all the way... remove the hoses on the blind end (non rod end) of each cylinder, and again pull the valve to the retract position.

If fluid continues to pour out of the cylinder - the piston seal is damaged, and the affected cylinder must be repaired.

To test if the valve spool is faulty - disconnect the a and b ports just after the valve. Turn on the system and check for seepage from the disconnected lines (without moving the lever).

SOURCE: John Deere Lawn Tractor LX176. Battery discharge

Locate voltage regulator above battery to the left as you sit on machine, its behind frame that supports steering wheel.Once you have found it use a light to shine on harness and follow the brown wire that leads into regulator. The plastic around that wire should not be burnt or showing any other color. The LX series machines had a problem with brown wire coming loose and causing the charging light to stay on.Remove plug from reg and use small screwdriver to clean out wire and work it a little so it makes good contact.

bad starter or bad ignition switch. try putting it in gear and rock it back and forth, if it starts then you have a dead spot in the starter.

Where is the free wheel lever on john deere x724

I'm not familiar with that exact model but I do have friends with JD riders similar to yours.

If you are referring to the lever that releases the hydrostatic transmission so you can push it without starting the engine it will be on the back of the tractor on the big steel plate that faces the rear of the tractor. There is a rod you can pull outward to release the transmission. Some have a small loop for a finger hold, some do not. The ones I am familiar with, you need to pull the rod out, away from the tractor. That should release it. If not, rock the tractor back and forth a few times.
