No nuts are underneath the rivets. If you want, you can drill the rivets out and replace them with bolts, lockwashers and nuts. I would recommend taking that entire assembly off if you go that route.

SOURCE: I have a BRIGGS AND STRATTON QUANTUM XTS 60 push mower and have broken the starting cord. Can you advise how to replace. It would appear that the recoil section of the starter is pop rivetted onto the

NO! Do not drill out the rivets. You need to remove the entire blower cover with 4 bolts (2 up front, 2 in back)
I'm going to link you to my two favorite "How-To" videos. Depending on your machine, one of these will show you enough to do it yourself. Once you do one, You'll be a pro. Just make sure you use enough rope and do not wind the spring too tight or you'll break it;

If I'm not mistaken, I had one like this once. I think when you purchase the new one, it comes with screws. You have to drill out the rivets to replace the recoil assembly. Try calling to purchase a new assembly and question them.

I have a toro personal pace gts self propelled. only model number i foind was 2h802. pull cord broke, would like to know how to replace it

You can buy the whole part...cord,handle,recoil spring all in one piece and remove the old install the new...or you can just buy a legth of pull cord and swap everything over.
First take off the top 4 phillip screws and remove the plastic cover....don't forget to pull off the oil fill cap, next drill out the center of the three pop rivets that hold the recoil spring in place, use a drill bit a little smaller than the rivet, next tap the rivet out using a punch and a hammer, next install the pull chord by first rewindind the coil spring then locking it oin place so it wont twist back and install the new line(pull cord)...next install it on the top of the motor and install 3 new 1/4" aluminumn pop rivets 3/8" long with a pop rivet gun all can be purchased atb Ace Hardware...reinstall the reverse of dismantle proceedure and happy mowing...don't forget to attach the black plastic/rubber pull cord handle.
Happy Mowing!!

Pull string won;t recoil

The recoil spring has broken. These are available at any lawn mower parts supply store. The process of changing the spring is tedious but can be done by anyone with average mechanical ability. If you removed the recoil assy (and air shroud if it is riveted on) and took the assembly to a Lawn Mower Repair shop usually they will change out the spring while you wait. If you can't get the recoil assy off take the mower with you to the repair shop. Again most shops will fix it while you if wait but if they are very busy usually they are serviced within 24 hours.

If you do attempt this yourself check in the tips section of FixYa on how to change the recoil stater rope after replacement of the spring.

I highly recommend you replace the pull rope at the time of the recoil spring replacement.

One final note... there is a possibility that the pull rope spool has been damaged where the spring attaches.

Thanks for using FixYa,

Kelly

Broken recoil on 10 briggs the recoil rivets came out of housing

I have had the same problem and use a pop rivet gun with steel rivets when reassembling the housings. Frequently these rivets get loose, & need drilled out & changed. I am assuming that the rivet holes in the housing are not elongated or you might have to drill to the next larger size rivet to install them. Hope this helps you, Rick
