Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop
You didn't mention what the problem was, only the alleged culprit.
If you have no display backlight, it is possible that the inverter for the fluorescent tube (or the tube itself) has failed and this is sometimes on a small, separate board and may not be too expensive to replace.
I assume you know that you can use an external monitor until you repair or replace your laptop; just hope that the video output for external displays is turned on by default, otherwise your kind of stuck. Unless you have been faithful in backing up your hard drive, most people would lean toward repairing the current problem so info on the drive can be retrieved.
