SOURCE: how do I disengage the feed dog so I can machine

If there is not a lever on the machine for lowering the feed dogs, check the manual for accessories to see if there is a darning plate than snaps over the feed dogs. There will be tiny holes in the face plate where the plate snaps into place.

In a pinch, you can set the stitch length to zero and securely tape an index card (punch out hole for needle) over the feed dogs.

Blue painter's tape works well as it does not leave a residue - I also use the tape as a guide when stitching long lengths that are too far from the fabric edge for any other type of guide.

I have machine MX3123 New Home - I lowered the dog feet - but it won't allow me to free hand quilt - what pressure foot do I need

You need a darning foot or free motion foot. They are shorter than standard presser feet, so they do not set on the feed dogs but hover just above. The additional space allows you to manipulate the fabric without interference from the feed dogs. (Be sure to drop the feed dogs or cover them with the supplied cover plate--whichever your machine uses.)

Bobbin thread will not catch unless the foot is down?

Ashleigh--Your machine will work satisfactorily ONLY if the presser foot is down. When the presser foot is up, the tension disk is released, therefore, no tension = a big knot of thread.

To free motion quilt, you should drop the feed dogs. Install a darning foot (this foot is shorter in length so when it is lowered, there is a space between the presser foot and needle plate). The space allows the fabric to be moved easily while stitching.

Some sewists will free motion quilt without a presser foot (if they don't have a darning foot), but that is very dangerous as one can easily sew through a finger. However, even when sewing without a presser foot, the presser foot mechanism needs to be lowered in order to properly form stitches.

How to Free Motion Quilt on Regular Sewing Machine

Trying to free motion quilt with darning foot. No directions in small manual. Does any know if there is a user guide for all that this machine can do.

General instructions for using a darning foot to FMQ:
Put in a new needle, install the darning foot, then be sure to DROP the feed dogs. Then practice on a scrap quilt sandwich (made up of the fabric and batting you plan to use on your quilt). (You may need to readjust the tensions if your top or bottom threads are popping through to the other side.) If you've not FMQ'd before, practice, practice, practice. You need to get your brain in tune with your hands (much like you did in elementary school learning to write). It even helps to get a white board and practice making FMQ designs with erasable white board markers or a pencil and paper pad. A FMQ instructor told us that it takes 50-60 times before your brain and hands develop the coordination. The more you do it, the better you will get. When FMQing, practice moving your hands as smoothly and consistently as possible. If your hands jerk, your stitches will sew it. Also, practice using a consistent machine speed for even stitching.

I have never used a machine to free motion quilt. That said, I have had issues sewing over thick seams. Since your machine runs smoothly otherwise... I think it is the thickness of the seamed area that is causing your problem. It may be too late but you could try trimming your seams so the layers fabric graduate to full thickness. Or you could use a chop stick or popcicle stick to press down on the thickness as you guide the machine over the seam. I also suggest that you Fan your seam allowances where your blocks come together. You can see how that is done here. http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/videos/v/62207505/machine-minute-bulky-intersections-fanning-seam-allowances.htm

Feed dogs won't move

No info on the sewing machine make or model. It sounds like something is binding up, is bent, or is tangled in the machine. Look around the front and back of the sewing area for a switch to lower the feed dogs.

Good luck

Why when i put the feed cover on i cant move the fabrice at all there is no room between the foot and the cover. i am trying to quilt together my quilts. thank you brenda g

I'm assuming your machine has a little plate you put over the feed dogs rather than a knob which disengages the feed dogs from moving to do free motion embroidery or something.

If this is the case there probably isn't enough room for your quilt sandwich under the foot.

You could try using a free motion embroidery foot rather than the regular foot with the feed dogs up and see if that allows you sufficient movement.

It would look like this:

It may take some practice still to get a smooth stipple if that is the effect you are going for.

You may find some other ideas on quilting websites to get around this problem or in a Yahoo group for quilters. I've only ever quilted in straight stitch using my walking foot so it feeds the quilt smoothly for me, never tried FMQ.
