Question about Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"

Won't idle, cranks and runs fine as long as trigger is depressed

Saw is new, less than 20 hours use. I have taken great care to keep the gas mixture clean and of correct oil ratio.

I didn't want to mess with the carb adjustments because it appears that a special tool is needed to turn the screws. Is this the case or am I missing something?

Start with 1 1/4 turns out on each and adjust as required once warmed up.

Could be just a carb adjustment required, the L screw on the carb will richen up the mixture, if increaseing the the idle screw does not help, try extra 1/4 turn out on the L screw, make sure the air filter is clean before makeing any adjustments.

If the carb screws have a spline rather than a screw driver slot, then the special tool is part no. 530035560, should be available from the local dealer, if not then the web.

Chainsaw runs but will not idle

Check the owners manual for the location of the idle screws. There should be two (low/high). After starting the saw, use a small screwdriver to turn the screw counterclockwise until the proper idle speed is reached. These screws are usually recessed in the housing on the left side of the saw, and may have an L and an H next to the holes. Be careful, as sometimes these are plastic screws and you don't want to strip them. Note the original position by looking into the hole so you have a starting reference point. If the screws have no effect on the idle, you may have a throttle linkage problem (if the saw will only run at high speed and the throttle trigger has no effect). Your goal is to have an idle speed that won't kill the engine but will also keep the chain from moving or creeping on the guide.

Hi i have a 019 l stihl won't start plug is fairly new with my glasses on i can't read the position's to start and have no manual

Not a great Stihl fan, however they usually have a single stop start, choke and half throttle lever, depress the throttle trigger and at the same time pull the lever fully uplet go of the throttle trigger which should now be lock up, this will engage the part throttle and choke, crank the machine until it fires once, then move the lever down one notch and crank again until it fires up.

Saw will not idle down, runs full

First thing to do is remove the top cover, now check that when you release the throttle trigger the spindle on the carb returns ahainst the idle screw stop, if not check the linkage is not sticking and holding it open, if ok make an adjustment to the idle screw, if this screws right out and the revs still do not decrease, then you have an air leak through a crank seal or gasket.

unleaded fuel is notorious for going stale, and it can leave a resinous coating in the carb-try running the saw on half choke with new gas and less oil eg 50 to 1 for say ten minutes, this should clear the gunk out-if this does not work, you have two choices-strip and clean the carb,or adjust the H (high) scew on the carb anti-clockwise by a quarter turn a time till it revs out full bore-good idea to remove the chain and wear ear defenders when adjusting-and always use a chainsaw at its max rpm,or you run the risk of "kickback"

Hi brandon First change the sparkplug with the same heat range,Check and clean the gas filter with compressed air.Remove the carb and very carefully disassembly entirely.Check the gaskets and the diafragms. At the fuel pump side there is a fine screen(clean it).Check the needle, the spring and lever.Unlock the screws L and H(note how many turns are they).Put the corp of the carb in a special clean solution for 12 hours and then clean it with compressed air(something is clogged there).Put all back together and try to start the engine. regards savumihai71
