The manual for vx-1300 is not available online, you need to order it from Brother calling 1-877-BROTHER (877-276-8437)

Most older machines start the thread from the spool on a spool holder then the thread goes through a tension dial, on to another tension holder inside the case. Then make sure the thread is going through a lever that goes up and down with the needle, through a thread holder near the needle.
