Question about Apple Computers & Internet
To open a spreadsheet 'FILE' you need a spreadsheet 'PROGRAM'. Unfortnately Apple don't give you one free anymore so you will have to buy one. Apple Numbers (part of iWork) or Microsoft Excel (part of MS Office) or you can download a freebie from the open office people.

strictly speaking, when you open the Excel spreadsheet program it loads an empty workbook file consisting of three blank worksheets for you to use.
