Question about Hobart A200 Stand Mixer

5 Answers

Hobart A200 Sir, I've got a Hobart A200, an older one. The small 15 tooth gear in the transmission broke at the keyway. I've replaced the gear, and everything else in the machine looks really good. (I did discover the hard way that the slow speed gear IS directional. Oops! After inverting it the right way, I've got all three speeds back.) But I've got slipping in the unit now..... All three speeds work fine, but under load the beater will lag, then catch up, lag and catch up.... I've since read that the thin nut at the bottom of the planetary is not supposed to be too tight? I'm trying to figure out the machine's clutching works. The clutch gear fits onto a 'brass' bearing with no keyway. I have not been below the brass bearing. Is there a key that could have broken beneath this level? Or is there a proper way to set up the shaft for the clutching to work correctly. Thanks in advance! Steve

Please visit the corp website www.hobartcorp.com and click on the "Sign In" link in the upper right hand corner. You'll need to complete a brief registration form, but then you'll land in the Hobart Resource Center.

Hobart no longer manufactures the A200 mixer - but you can review and download a user manual and a parts catalog from the Resource Center on your mixer. That should help you understand the parts need.

We do sell replacement parts direct to end users, just visit our service website atwww.hobartservice.com - and click on the "Locate on Office" link. You'll be able to contact your local Service branch to purchase a replacement part OR to have them take a look at the unit and provide a quote on fixing it.

If you have additional questions on Hobart products - mail to sherri.wilmoth@hobartcorp.com .

Check the planetary.this is the bottom part of the mixer where you attach the hook. You will see two nuts; make sure their tight as the planetary may have moved down.

it could be on the thin nut at the bottom of the planetary. try to use a spacer to make it not to tight on the parts.

Can not get second gear in my Hobart mixer

Dear anonymous
When you say you can't get 2nd gear in I assume you took out to replace grease and now you are having issues with putting it all back together. With that in mind let me tell you what you may have done. Looking at the diagram of gears and shafts side by side (found on Internet under a200 manual) you need to find the older model a200 manual. Inside the shifting yoke is a divers key and that has to fit inside the yoke then carefully put back on the shaft while depressing that inner shaft spring I think you have left this out or out of place this keeping it from going back together and your getting 2nd gear on

Check the spring pin that locks the motor shaft to the main drive gear in the gear box. You should be able to turn the motor from the back at the cooling fins and watch the shaft spin in the gear, that is if the pin is sheared. That is a common problem. if you plan on keeping this machine for a while, i recomend that you spend a little more on a quality spring pin,

good luck.

When you say lag and catch up. This may not be a issue. I have seen this with dough and a spiral hooks on all sizes of Hobarts the hook and dough get in a position to push the hook forward and the drive gears catch back up the hook. in fist gear on the 20 quart this is common for sure. but its normal. if you have a real slip from a sheared key it will not take long to where you can hold the planetary shaft with your hand and stop it. another slip that might be possible is if your mixer has the first generation worm shaft gear Assembly. when it is worn out it will slip you. this is the shaft that drives directly off the motor. you can tell if it's first Gen by it has a large spring on it. the tow later versions are all keyed to the shaft no chance to slip unless a key shears.

Mixers eating brass gear driven by motor pinon

Thats called a sacraficial gear because its brass which is a soft metal. This gear takes most of the strain but i think either a spacer is missing or the gears arent meshing correctly. The transmission assembly the shaft next to it make sure all the spacers/washers are there.Goto hobartcorp.com you will find an exploded parts breakdown.

First and second gears seem stuck

You most likely broke a keyway on page 14, item 36.

The unit is filled with grease, and is not as easy as it may seem. Being that a grease change is likely needed, it's about three hours work for a trained tech.

My electric stand mixer stopped mixing - the motor stills runs but nothing mixes

You hopefully broke a keyway. Which is usually the case. (The key on the shaft that engages the motor worm gear is the place to look. Sometimes the center shaft gives way. Check all three gears.

The transmission uses grease. So "taking a look at it" is not a easy task.

amy, depending on how old your mixer is there are 2 types of clutches for 1st gear.these could be your problems--a key is sheared on the shaft--shaft/gear is broken.the bottom part of the mixer where you put on the attachements is called the planetary, does it look like it has moved down?you could tell if the dough hook, wire whip, ect, ect is hitting the bottom of the bowl.if this is the case its just simply tightening the 2 nuts next to the beater shaft.if this is not the case you would have to dissasemble the transmission.let me know.
