Garmin nuvi does turn on when connected to power in car
Garmin nuvi still turns on with on/off button and turns on with usb connection. It no longer turns on with cigarette lighter adapter in any vehicle. It seems to have destroyed the cigarette lighter outlet in both of our vehicles. (my cell phone charger doesn't activate in either vehicle anymore, even though it works in cars in which I haven't attempted to use the garmin.)
Re: garmin nuvi does turn on when connected to power in...
I had the same problem. My Nuvi 350 did not power up for a couple of days. I suspected moisture to be the culprit. So I took my wife's hair dryer and blew hot air(in the intermediate setting) into the SD card slot in the GPS for a couple of minutes. Take care not to overheat the GPS or Screen. Pronto my GPS powered up without any issues. Hope this helps

I updated my Nuvi 40 with the latest software and it will not reboot into GPS mode with the usb cable connected. It used to work. I have figured out how to get it to charge with a standard USB cable: 1) Power it on.2) Press the battery icon for 8 seconds - it will enter TEST mode.3) Plug in your USB cable from the PC to the Nuvi - the screen will change to say charging.4) Press the power button 3 times rapidly - it will say Charging across the screen and it will go dim and then dark.5) To wake it up and use GPS mode while charging simply press the power button 3 times rapidly, again. Works Great!
You can try three things to try and get the Nuvi to start normally:
1) soft reset: Press the power-on button for at least 20 seconds - starting from power off. It should restart.
2) master reset: This will revert to factory defaults erasing all POI's, Favourites, Tracks, Routes etc. From power-off hold the lower right corner for at least 20 seconds while pressing the power-on button once. A question should appear to erase all user data. Press yes and it will revert to factory defaults.
3) Connect a USB cable in power off. Connect it to a PC / Mac which is also powered down. Start the PC/MAC - the Garmin Nuvi should start in communication mode. Connect to the internet and load MyGarmin.com and try to update the software version to the latest one (if available). If necessary install the Garmin communication plug-in in the webbrowser.
With the limited information provided, a simple first step is to make sure the internal battery is either fully charged or is in a condition to accept a charge. When the internal battery's charge is allowed to below a certain level, it will no longer be capable of accepting a charge via the car charger.
The battery can be conditioned to accept a charge easily, however. This is done by connecting the GPS to the computer via USB port, NOT the car charger. Some Garmin GPS units come with a 120 volt charger that connects to the USB port of the GPS - this method is also an acceptable charge / condition method. Leave the GPS connected for 8 hours or longer (over night) and try to power up again.
I connected the unit to the car charger instead of the USB charger and then held down the reset for 10-15 seconds, after which the system would show the computer connection on the charger and then boot up when not on the charger.
Your nuvi 5000 does NOT have a internal battery and that means that you cannot operate it unless it is connected to a 12 volt power source. Connecting it to your computer via USB allows you to install map updates, check for firmware updates, etc, but you will not be able to use it as a gps while it is connected to the computer. There is nothing wrong with your gps.
To use your gps in the home you need to purchase a 12 volt adapter, there are several types, plug the adapter into your wall outlet and connect your gps to it. If you can sit near a window it will help in picking up the satellite signal. Just keep in mind that you cannot connect the 12 volt power supply and use the usb cable at the same time. Enjoy your gps.
