Coil on Brigg straton lawn mower does not produce spark

Coil dont produce spark,check kill switch wire ok, checked coil primary showed 2.9 ohms and secondary at .2 ohms, check for grounded circuit on coil not showing. I need a wiring diagram onn the coil.

If there is no spark and the wires are ok, face the fact that the ignition unit requires replacement, any amount of testing it is not goig to get you anywhere

Hi eugenemcmena...

Sounds like you have dirt/debris in your carburetor jets,fuel passages or a diaphgram that is becoming non-flexible.
Be sure to check your fuel tank for water and dirt/debris, if there is water/debris then you need to clean your tank.
Also check you fuel line condition after a while they will degrade and need replacment.
Make sure you are getting spark at the spark plug, to do this:
Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting fire at the spark plug.
You do this by grounding the plug on the head of the engine and pulling the crank rope, if you are getting spark then:
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one.
Also make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the mower/weedeater is over a couple of years old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit,because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.
Be sure to remove all plastic and rubber parts before using the laquer thinner because it can dissolve the plastic parts and render them unuseable.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float (if you have one) for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.
Once you have your carburetor rebuilt that should solve your problem.

Check stop switch mechanism (kill switch, safety interlock cable). Check for damaged coil wire to spark plug. Make sure coil wire is completely seated onto spark splug. Sometimes the coil wire gets damged and shorts out to the shroud.

I have a cub cadet lt104 and we replaced the battery and solenoid and it won't start

wont crank or wont start. 2 different things...

wont crank, in this order: check fuse, brake switch ( adjustment and operation ) and then ignition switch

wont start but does crank: check for spark, yes then check fuel shut off solenoid. no, disconnect kill wire to coil and check again, still no, coil is issue, if yes after disconnecting kill wire suspect a safety switch

What will happen to the mower with a bad coil? How will I know it needs to be replaced?

a mower with a bad coil has no spark and will not run. you know something is wrong if the mower will not run. if you take out the spark plug , from the engine and connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug and lay the spark plug on the engine block so that the spark plug makes a good ground connection from the spark plug body to the engine metal and then have a friend pull the recoil starter rope, you will see a spark jump from the inside terminal of the spark plug to the arm of the spark plug that is part of the spark plug body.
if you see no spark, then there may be something wrong with the coil or with the primary ignition circuit.

You must have a friend pull the recoil starter because it is nearly always impossible to see the spark when you are trying to pull the recoil starter yourself. you cannot see the spark because you are moving to much to focus your eyes. the spark is hard enough to see from 12 inches away.
You can test the spark coil by removing it from the mower but only if it is an automotive type spark coil. I have a feeling that it is not an automotive type spark coil. you can test the primary winding of the spark coil for continuity with a $10.00
multi meter from walmart,home depot or lowes or harbor freight
You must fully read and fully understand the instructions.of the multi meter in order to use the multi meter without burning out the multi meter. you can test the primary windings of the coil with the coil electrically disconnected from the lawn mower. you must make writen notes so that you can reconnect the coil exactly as you removed it.
the primary windings of the coil should read between 10 to 1000 ohms. if there is no ohms reading the coil is open,no connection and you need to buy a new coil. if the primary winding has a resistance (ohms reading) the coil has conitinuity but still must be tested for shorts to ground. on the highest resistance scale that your meter has , put one test probe on one terminal of the primary winding and the other test probe on the ground of the coil or the case of the coil. a good coil has no ohms reading fromthe coil primary winding to ground.

you should buy a lawnmower repair manual for your make and model of lawnmower because there is a lot to this and i cant type that much. too much for me to tell & too much i dont remember. Its been 15 years since i worked on an ignition system of a lawnmower. try asking your question on and on or, and study up on it.

Will not spark

The first thing to do is to be sure you have the spark gap set correct. It should be .010 gap. You can use a feeler gauge or a 3 x 5 index card to set it. Isolate the coil by removing the single wire going to it. Check for spark now. If you have it, then the kill switch or wire is shorted. If you dont have a spark then the coil is bad, Thanks, George

unplug the wire that comes from the tractor then check for spark if you do then stat by checking he safety switches

Lawn mower not sparking any ideas

pull the wire going to kill switch - recheck for spark if spark grounding switch, if no spark

pull wire off the coil retest if no spark faulty coil indicted

but be sure that unit is not a point model coil 1st
if a point model coil you will see a approximatly 10 mm gap on either side of coil winding and armature legs where it mounts
if briggs coil that is , if so most likely point and condensor need replacing

but if a magnetron coil unit then magnetron is faulty
replace it & set air gap to 0.010 " and reconnect kill wires

I take the wire off the magnett coil it will crank using key put it back on it just spin troy bilt tiller model 192437 type1218e1 code ooo1o61a brigg straton 8hp

sounds like 2 possibilities, the wire to the coil is shorted to the frame or the ignition switch is bad. I would try and check the route of the wire for the coil, it is the kill wire and if it is grounded it will not allow the coil to fire the spark plug.

No spark

Check the side stand kill switch if your bike has one. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it. Check the fuses. How good is the battery? Try a jump start from your car battery. Is the handlebar kill switch on? Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Install new spark plug.

If that doesn't do it, check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center casing. If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop. You can screw up a CDI unit checking it yourself.

Check the coil impedance on the primary and secondary side. You'll have to disconnect the battery negative cable so you don't short something out. Unplug the spark plug wires and the two sets of smaller wires connected to the primary side of the coil. The primary coil reading should be between 3.7 ohms and 4.6 ohms while the secondary (spark plug side) should be between 34.2 k-ohms and 41.6 k-ohms. If the resistance values you measure are outside of these ranges, you need to replace the coil.
