Mary Ann, you'll need a little more than this to get a really good answer. What type of wireless adapter is it? The model number and when did you purchase it? Is it a router? Is it a card that plugs into a Mac? My super-wild guess is that you have an Airport Express/Extreme which has a configuration error. But who knows . . .
