Do you have spark at the plug - remove it and ground it while you crank the engine . is this an overhead valve engine ? have you checked compression .

that wound have been the next place to go - if the spark plug had been wet and you still had spark advice would have been that - glad you found it

I have a 15 HP briggs ovc engine. It will not start. Have checked these items. Compression good, have a good spark when plug is out and grounded, Timeing is okay, valves working properly. Even using starting fluid I get no fireing at all. Is it possible that the plug could not be sparking in the engine eventhough it sparks when out and grounded? I am really confused! Can you help? Thanks David

Dirty fuel in the tank, breather in the filler cap blocked, or partly blocked main jet in the carb, if there is a fuel solinoid on the base of the carb check its function by removing, when the ignition is turned on the plunger should retract into its housing,

I have a 7 year-old craftsman mower with a 22 HP Briggs engine that has the same issue. After about an hour, the mower acts as if it is starving for fuel and then stalls. Then after about 5 minutes of sitting, it will run for a little while longer.
If your engine is similar to mine, then its carb has a fuel shut off solenoid which shuts off fuel to the Main Jet when Voltage is removed to prevent backfiring when the key is shut off.
Unfortunately, this solenoid can also cause the carb to starve for fuel when not working properly. In my case, when I cleaned the solenoid and the solenoid's connections, the tractor had no problem after that.

Hope that helps,
Steve

14 hp briggs runs fuel filter dry every 15 minutes. have to blow into fuel tank to fill filter up then it runs for a while again. whats up ?

Sounds like the tank is not venting. Try leaving the cap a little loose and see if it stays running. If it does, either the vent for the tank or a vented gas cap is plugged
