Question about LaCie Computers & Internet

6 Answers

I have a 1TB LaCie Extreme d2 which has decided not to mount anymore, the drive spins up when the firewire 800 or 400 is connected, but that's it. It doesn't appear in the profiler either.

The problem still exists, I'm using a mac running OS X 10.5.5

  • kel3354 Oct 24, 2008

There is no driver needed for OS X

  • kel3354 Oct 24, 2008

I've already tried it with my MacBook Pro with the same result

  • kel3354 Oct 24, 2008

I'm the only user on the system

  • kel3354 Oct 24, 2008

It's not mounting using USB 2 either

  • kel3354 Oct 24, 2008

The drive does not appear in the disc utilities

  • kel3354 Oct 24, 2008

I'm going to try the power supply answer to my question.
    Many thanks

1. Make sure to copy any files on your hard disk to another location because reformatting will erase them.
2. Click on your computer hard disk’s icon. Select Applications ? Utilities ? Disk Utility.
3. In the left hand column, click on the drive icon for the LaCie Disk (or the name of your external drive). Make sure you click on the first icon, not the second level volume icon.
4. Select the Partition tab.
5. Select the format type from the Format drop-down menu.
* Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (recommended) or Mac OS Extended.
6. Click on the Options button.
7. Select the type of partition you want to use:
* GUID Partition Table - for bootability on Intel-based Macs
* Apple Partition Map - for bootability on PowerPC-based Macs
8. Click OK.
9. Click the Partition button.

First try in another Mac System if possible. If it works then its a problem its a problem with your FW800 port or the OS/drivers.

try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and also update the firmaware.

Link which will be of help ;

I believe the issue is the plug into the drive from the power supply. Please check pin voltages on the old power supplies.Order additional d2 power supplies, one for production and one to have a spare on hand.

    Thanks

also uninstall the old drivers and then reinstall it again and then try.

  • ready2helpu Oct 24, 2008

this is what you have to do

Go to Finder > Preferences > General and make sure that there is a check mark (not a dash) in Show these items on the Desktop. Do the same in Sidebar. The LaCie drive should reappear.

The origin of the problem may be related to the known issue where Tiger unmounts FireWire drives if you are using fast user switching and one user logs out.

    thanks.

  • ready2helpu Oct 24, 2008

sometimes changing the power cord also helps.try it.

    pardon me..it is firewire..

well..there is only one of those..methinks..so it is a driver issue..unless the drive it self tanked.

well..then with no driver, and no signal..the evident conclusion is that the drive tanked..hope you have the data backed up..

have you checked the output on the power adapter when you plugged in? if not, there is no hard reset for the drive. you just have to isolate the board on you external hdd.

Deference Lacie d2 Quadra1TB/Lacie big disk ?

It's all about the interfaces.
The Quadra has four interfaces: • eSATA • FW 400 • FW 800 • USB 2.0
The triple has all but the eSATA interface listed above.
For doing video work you want a big drive with a fast interface. If you have eSATA available then that's the fastest. If you don't then you're just as well off to go with the triple interface. The FW 800 would be the next fastest, then the USB 2.0, then the FW 400.
Because of the way that data is transferred I believe that when doing video work you would be best served by the FW 400 instead of the USB 2.0 even though the USB is faster I don't believe it is a full duplex communication so the FW 400 is actually better for video.

Lacie d2 external drive

I support the comments of (fire sine) I have the d2 120gb Lacie and it was down for two years.  I took it to my apple guys and they said that I needed to go to a data recovery service which would cost a gang of money.  Come to find out, when I decided to update my internal hard drive on my Mac Pro, I had to buy a SATA, IDE, USB 2.0 adapter to back up the internal and transfer to the new internal. Long story short, something said, Hey try and open the Lacie and bypass the board in the enclosure and connect directly to the Western Digital drive inside.  AND WHALA! I got my info, so all I need is a new enclosure.
