Question about KitchenAid Refrigerators

I have a Kitchen Aid refrigerator model KTRS20K which stopped working (everything felt warm and freezer not working ). I replaced the defrost timer, it didn't quite match but was told it was a re

Do you think an exact replacement of defrost timer is necessary ? I think the compressor and starting device are OK, because it will cool when timer is turned by hand. The replacement timer used is Whirlpool 482493.It came with a "Timer loose motor lead" and several options to use one is "Cumulative compressor run application"or continuous run application, by trying both it will work for a short time then become warm again, hope this helps, signed "Frustrated"

Tell me if this began when you changed the defrost timer. I need to know if the compressor is trying to run, JT

To answer your question about defrost timer the 482493 is the correctKTRS20K replacement for the KTRS20K KitchenAid Refrigerator. Things that will make your model stop cooling are compressor start components.http://www.pcappliancerepair.com/part-de...

Evaporator and condenser fan, along with defective thermostat are possibly some other choices for not cooling, JT

John, thanks for responding to my problem, my wife said if it doesn't get fixed soon I'll be sleeping in the garage !!. You mentioned both fans, evaporator and compressor fans seem to be running OK. You also asked if "This happened when defrost timer was replaced " If I understand your question, refrigerator stopped working, then I replaced the defrost timer. you mentioned about thermostat, where is it located and how do you test it? Also how can I test the compressor start components? I'm still confused about replacement defrost timer and extra lead that has to be set for correct option. When turning knob on bottom of timer frig will work for awhile then won't cycle back (start cooling) thanks again for your help.

OK I don't want you to be put out in a cold garage so let me see if I can help you get her refrigerator going. Here is a parts manual in PDF format=>http://appliancepartssoutheast.com/KTRS2...
Here is a link to Adobe if you don't already have the new Adobe Reader=> http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/re...
You mentioned a wire that you may not have hooked up on the defrost timer. One wire powers the timer and if slipped over the wrong leg of the defrost timer will cause the timer to stop along with compressor. That may be what is happening so look that over and I will try to locate a wiring diagram if we need one. Let me know if you happen to find what is causing the compressor to stop cooling and I will be looking to hear back from you, Thanks John Tripp

Hi john, thanks for the material. I have the paperwork that came with the new timer. My old timer did not have any leads coming out of it, it just pushed in the connector. I also have the schematics that were behind front grill. The timer instructions have 2 settings, one for 12 hr or 24 hr continuous run. I dont know what application I had before because old timer didn't have black lead. I have tried both settings and frig only cools for a short time, after changing black lead I turn wheel at bottom of timer to get ot going but stops after a short time. Thanks

OK if not the timer I need you to feel top of compressor to confirm that compressor is running. If compressor stops running feeling top of compressor should be too hot to hold hand there. If compressor runs and does not get hot when freezer and fresh food section warm would indicate a Freon Leak. At this point how you set defrost timer is not important because you either have a start/run component defective or Freon leak. Feel compressor and tell me what you find, Thanks JT

We seem to be running out of room here for comments so I offer my email address appliancepartsse@yahoo.com If you are here locally in the USA I can call you and maybe offer some advice that may be helpful. Just copy your post link above in your email or just copy this=>http://www.fixya.com/support/t11661277-k...
so I will know who you are. I have a feeling that the problem you are having is not related to the defrost timer. So if you do not mind emailing me I will do what I can to help you find the answer you need.Basically the last post requires that you pull your refrigerator away from wall, remove the lower panel covering the compressor and let me know if feeling top of the compressor is too hot to keep hand on top of compressor. Thanks JT

Hi John, very sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner. Fortunately for me I'm still sleeping indoors ! Today I puled the refrigerator away from wall, then touched the compressor, it felt warm but no hot to the touch. 24 hrs ago I turned it on because it wasn't running before, in a couple of hrs it worked, both freezer and frig, next morning it was still cold, but that evening it got warm. When I was looking at the compressor I removed the start relay to see if I could test it but I think i's sold state. I went on line and found out it's a Maytag AP 3156242. I think I fried the relay because I shook it sounded like loose parts were inside then reinstalled it. I put the clip that holds the cover back, but without the cover I just slipped it over the relay making sure it didn't touch anything. When I connected the power cord back it arched and started to smell like burned plastic. I know that the relay is gone but do you think it's worth replacing ? Do you know where I could buy one that is not expensive? Thanks for your help ( My wife is probably considering divorce)

You still hammering away on your Kitchenaid? If the start relay has shorted you will have no choice but to try to see if that was the problem all along. If you felt top of compressor while ruining and warm then when it stops and will not restart top of compressor will become too hot to keep hand there. Reason the compressor must run to remove heat even from itself. Your best bet is to replace the components with something called Supco URSC10 1/12 TO 1/2 HP 115 The link below takes you to a PDF and you will need to scroll to page 6http://www.supco.com/images/09%20relay%2...
To answer your question Is It Worth It? Yes if you understand how to test your compressor like described near bottom of page belowhttp://appliance911seabreeze.com/
Call me if you run into problems and I will walk you through this. First email me appliancepartsse@yahoo.com If you don't feel comfortable then I would buy another refrigerator, Thanks Sea Breeze

That does not sound like a defrost timer problem. Sounds like a condenser or evaporator fan is beginning to fail. They don't always stop when they fail. Many will slow down and stop while you are not looking causing the refrigerator to stop cooling for a while. Let me know if you have any questions, Thanks Sea Breeze

The machine goes into the defrost mode every day or two. During defrost mode you will see these symptoms. After an hour or two, it should return to normal. If not, the defrost timer may be stuck in the defrost position.

This is uaually caused by the condenser fan next to the compressor not running. Remove the cardboard backing to see it, give it a spin if it's not running. Even if it starts running with a spin you'll need to replace it.

Is the freezer cold enough? Should be close to 10 degrees.
Is there water or ice in the ice mold? If not put water in it and see if it dumps the ice after it’s frozen. If there is ice, lift the cut off arm and let it drop to see if it will start.
If it does dump the ice but don’t refill with water.
Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.

Top half fridge not cold freezer department fine

I had the same problem; the top fridge compartment was warming up to 14C while the freezer compartment was starting to defrost (frozen stuff was starting to become soft. I took the rear wall off the freezer compartment and found it all iced up. I defrosted it with a blower heater then powered it back up. It all worked fine for a month when the same thing happened. I figured that the defrost cycle wasn't working. I located the defrost timer on the rear right-side of the fridge. I rotated it several times and found that the fridge was turning on and off. I rotated it until the fridge turned off. I waited 5 minutes then stuck my head into the freezer compartment and felt the rear wall at the bottom where he drain is; it felt warm so I guessed the defrost heater element was ok. I ordered a defrost timer and installed it. I haven't had a problem since.
