Hard disk cyclic redundancy check

A cyclic redundancy check error on a hard disk means that part of a file read from the hard disk doesn't match the expected value.

A cyclic redundancy check error, in other words, means that files on your hard drive are corrupted.

Repair a cyclic redundancy check error on a hard disk using the Check Disk tool in Windows.

Click "Start" and click "Computer."

Right-click the hard disk with the cyclic redundancy check error under "Hard Disk Drives" and click "Properties."

Click the "Tools" tab at the top of the hard disk "Properties" window.

Click "Check Now" under "Error Checking."

Select "Automatically Fix File System Errors" and "Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors" in the "Check Disk" window by clicking each option if it isn't already selected.

Start a disk check and repair by clicking "Start" in the "Check Disk" window.

Click "Yes" if the "Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?" prompt appears.

A disk can't be checked if it's in use, so you'll need to restart Windows to check it.

Restart your computer by clicking "Start," clicking the arrow icon to the right of "Shut Down" and clicking "Restart."

Fix a Cycle Redundancy Check Error

The "Cyclic Redundancy Check" error is a Windows error message telling you there's a problem reading data you're trying to access.

The root of this problem could either be a damaged storage device or a corrupt file.

Windows has built-in tools to attempt to fix to this problem, and avoid further errors.

Click on the "Start" menu in the bottom left-hand corner and click "Run."

Type in "cmd" and press "Enter" on your keyboard.

This will open a black command prompt box.

Type in "chkdsk /f" and press "Enter."

If you receive a message saying the disk will be checked the next time the system starts, press "Y" and then "Enter."

Restart your computer by closing the command prompt box and selecting "Shut Down" from the Start menu.

Wait for the disk scan to reach 100 per cent.

This may take awhile.

When it completes, your drive errors may be fixed.

Avoid future problems with this type of error by replacing the file that caused the problem.

For example, if you got the error when using a text document, open the document and copy all the text (press "Ctrl" and "A" at the same time and then "Ctrl" and "C" at the same time).

Create a new text document and paste the text in by pressing "Ctrl" and "V" simultaneously. Save the new file, and delete the old document.

Hope this heps

The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

Hello,
The file or folder could get corrupted due to improper turning off the PC like abrupt power cut
without an UPS backup and various other reasons.Unfortunately there is no guaranteed way to fix the
corrupted file/folder,but there are few things you could try that fixes the issue sometimes.

1) You can ask windows to check for errors and fix them. This may fixe the corrupted files or folders in some cases.Follow the steps below to run the error checking process.
  1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
  2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
  3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
  4. Use one of the following procedures:
    • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
    • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
    • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer? Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
Like I said there is no guarantee this would fix the issue but its worth the try.The only way to keep the folders or files safe is to make backup copies on another hard drive or CD/DVD.Do let me know if it helped.

Thanks for using Fixya!

When i power on the laptop it says "please install windows in your hard disk " but when i reboot it 5-6 times it loads the windoes automaticaaly . please help

Hi, This problem usually occurs when your HDD or your Hard Disk Drive is showing signs of bad sector. I would suggest that you run this command in Command prompt to check the integrity of your file system. its not loading normally because it is sensing from problems with the files. > click start > run > cmd > hit enter.. on command line type "sfc /scannow" after hitting enter you will see a progress bar. Any corrupt, missing or incorrect files would be replaced by this process. If this option doesn't work, you could try to run a checkdisk to see if there is a bad sector in the hard drive. heres how:
  • go to my computer
  • right-click local disk c: and choose properties
  • go to tools tab
  • then click error checking
  • a box will appear and you have 2 choices
  1. Automatically Fix file system errors
  2. Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check boxes
After clicking on start a window will appear telling you that you need to restart the computer to run the Check Disk before loading windows to check the windows file. click yes and then wait for the reboot and check disk to start.
It may be a long process but it will definitely inform you what is wrong with your computer.
Hope this would help you.
Cheers!!

H:\$MFT KEEPS POPING IN MY PC

MFT stands for Master File Table. NTFS (New Technology File System) uses it in order to record references of all files and folders of the corresponding volume. It is the most significant metadata structure of NTFS volume. It is the point from where NTFS installed system starts from to access any file. Any corruption caused to MFT will lead to Data Recovery routine. When MFT gets corrupted, user may fail to access files and carry out usual operations like renaming, deleting or opening the file with an error similar to:
“H:\ $MFT is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility.”
The error is specific to Windows XP and 2000. Users can also encounter the same error message as a Windows pop-up balloon at the lower-right corner of computer screen.
  • To resolve the issue, we need to first take full data backup and check for its consistent status. If media fails to restore data or the backup operation faces some difficulty, Data Recovery Software will be required to recover.
  • We can start Recovery Console by starting our system using the Windows operating system disk.
  • We can press R to select the repair option on the Welcome to setup screen.
  • We need to specify Administrator password, if there is no administrator password just press Enter.
  • We can then use chkdsk /H:Drive Letter: through command prompt and try repairing the damaged MFT.
Chkdsk /H: acts upon the file system and attempts to repair the damage. But it can cause more damage if it fails. In such cases, we need to format the drive and restore data from backup. If backup has not been efficiently taken or can’t offer full restoration, Data Recovery applications can help.

Hard disk failed

dear sir

you can't recognise your hard disk, but you can rectify your data from your damaged hard disk ( by using data recovery softwares ( ex: ontrack data recovery etc., ) ). This is the only option
& you can't use that hard disk in future.

Problem with seeing files on external Hard drive

What has happened is that your file system on the hard drive became corrupt becasue windows had not updated the MFT on the drive. THe MFT is a table of contents regarding whats on your drive.

What happened is similar to someone cutting out a few pages of the table of contents in a book that has a lot of pages.

Windows tried to fix this stupid programming method by asking people to always use the "safely remove hardware" button in the taskbar to force it to update the MFT.
In this case yur a victim of the Hard Discs MFT not updating properly probably because software was accessing the drive when it was disconnected from the machine.

You need to run chkdsk to have it rebuild your MFT.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 <-- How to perform Check disk
*NOTE: Remember to use the drive letter that the USB External is on.. Not just type CHKDSK. It will default to drive C to scan for errors. ex: c:\chkdsk g: (where g is the drive your external usb is)
If you get an error like "CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.. see my notes below.
Beware that it will take a LONG TIME to perform this procedure.

If this doesn't fix it.. contact a data recovery specialist.. It's worth the cost. There are two types. Simple and Advanced.
Simple= recovering files your deleted with the delete button (fairly easy with the right software)
Advanced = recovering files from a hard disk crash or file system corruption. (Not easy and very time consuming)
