I have an Ace garbage disposal model 4000 and I just want to know if it is a hard wired or plug in model. It is installed already!

They are rarely hardwired in because it is easier for the electrician to put an outlet under the sink and connect it to a switch than it is to hard wire. If it is hardwired, it would need flexible and moisture resistant conduit. This would be expensive. Disposals don't come with any wiring attached, you have to get the pigtail and wire it to the disposal and then plug it in.

My garbage disposal is leaking through the bottom of the unit through holes by the reset button. Why is this occuring?

Disposal is rusted out and needs replacement.
There are no repair parts for disposals.

I wrote EZ do-it-yourself installation tips for when I worked apartment maintenance that will save time and sometimes money.

When turned on it sounds like a spoon is being grinded, metal on metal. I have it off but do not see anything stuck in there. model 5-82 s/n 07111940440 Bought from Ace about 3yrs ago.

The bearings are probably rusted.
Disposal will still work.
If disposal is clean enough to pass as new, buy another exact model at Ace > replace disposal body only, and don't replace sink strainer. Return old disposal in new box as defective, with fresh clean sink strainer inside box so it looks like one that was just purchased. This way, you have new receipt and give yourself extended product warranty.

I installed a new garbage disposal and then connected the dishwasher hose--BUT--I guess I was to remove a plug so that the water can get through. How do I remove the plug?

Knock out the plug with a big screwdriver. Lay the unit on its side and insert a big screwdriver. Drive it with a hammer if necessary, using short sharp, controlled strokes to avoid damaging the parts inside. See step 15 of the installation instructions here:

What can a garbage disposal be expected to grind?

all i can think of is that the blades could be dull or the stems were not all out of the disposl and they drained out with normal use. they could be small enough to filter through without being ground.
