Question about E-Machines eMachines Desktop PC
There are a few issues that can halt Windows from installing.
1. If your Microsoft Windows CD is a copy & not a valid CD this can happen. (Possible bad copy).
2. You CD-ROM drive is either dirty, (Inside) or it's not reading the disk. (Check the data cable on the cd-rom drive. Make sure it is fully connected). (Swap out the data cable is needed).
3. E-Machine's can & most do have more than one partition on the primary hard disk drive.
Most likely there are two hidden partitions on the drive. If the manufacture placed one of the partitions at the top of the drive, (As many do to stop owners from upgrading their operating system with their own CD). The installation of XP can be halted. You will not see an error message from windows during installation in this case.
(The hidden partition is too small to allow windows to install, 4MB in size is about norm).
One option is to contact the manufacture & buy their upgraded OS CD for your model.
Another would be to erase the drive with a floppy disk. A standard Win98 boot disk will do the job but that is ill advised.
The best way to clean & format the entire drive would be to find the manufacture of the hard disk drive & go to their web site. Download their Dos software to create a bootable floppy disk for Dos. Boot the system with the floppy disk & format the drive. This will remove all the hidden partitions & make the drive whole again.
Most hard disk drive manufactures also provide software to create a bootable CD. This will also clean the drive & set it up for window. (You should back up all your data to CD or a second drive).
Other software can be used to totally clean a hard disk drive. "Darik's Boot And Nuke".
