Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

When I power on screen is black after a few minutes laptop shuts down. Unable to open dvd to reinstall data. I have minimal, basic knowlege level with computers. I read there had been a class action lawsuit regarding my laptop, noted below, involving faulty NVIDIA chips I think they referred to this as chips?? I was not aware of this and the deadline for a claim is expired. This computer went down a while back but was expensive and I hope to fix it now. Any thoughts??

Hi tmaree. I should remove my battery and then plug my ac adapter in?? Okay, I will try this. What you said is exactly what is happening. I turn the computer on then after a minute or so the computer shuts down without actually loading anything. I will let you know if this works. My little girl woke up crying I just got her back into bed so I will try it now. Thank you for trying to help me.

I had a similar sounding issue with an apple macbook pro, turned out to be the battery terminals not connecting properly would **** all the power supply from the cord (wouldn't recharge the battery) but didn't allow enough power to reach the cpu in order to boot. It would turn on and turn off without actually loading anything. The solution was to remove the battery and remain plugged into power supply. I hope that helps

Could be a faulty screen or a GPU issue. I would get it exchanged for a new one.

I shut down the laptop at once and i turned it on immediately.so only power light is on and the computer is not working.only black screen is seen.

Try this :

1. unplug the ac adapter and remove the battery .
2. press and hold power button for a minute
3. now put the battery back and plug in ac adapter
4. turn on the laptop now

it should work.

if not, try removing hard drive and memory modules then reinstall them back.

if the issue persists, your motherbord has gone bad.

Macbook turning on difficulties.

Try these steps:

1.) With the machine OFF, hold down a SHIFT key and power the machine on. Continue holding SHIFT for about a minute. This is called Safe Mode. This will test your disk, clear caches, and disable extensions. It probably will take longer to load.

2.) If your Mac boots all the way to the Desktop normally, click the Apple menu (top, left corner of screen) and click "Shut Down".

3.) Once it has shut down, wait a few seconds and power it back on (NO SHIFT key this time).

4.) If it boots, it should be okay. If not, you may have to reinstall your operating system.

To Reinstall Mac OS X: WARNING: There is a _slight_ risk of loss of your data (pictures, documents, etc.) when reinstalling your operating system.

1.) You'll need the system disc(s) that came with your Mac. Put disc 1 (if there are more than one) into the drive. Hold down the power button to turn the machine off if necessary. Put the disc in and turn it on *while holding down the C key* (to boot from "CD" -- actually DVD). Look for an "Options" button, depending on which version of Mac OS X you have. Click it. Select "Archive and Install" and follow the prompts. (If you have 10.6 "Snow Leopard", you won't find an "Options" button. It will "Archive and Install" automatically.

2.) Once you have reinstalled the operating system, it should start normally.

Good Luck! Please let us know if you continue to have problems.

Hold the power button for 5 seconds or more - does it turn off properly? If so, can you turn it back on afterwards?

Take out the battery and unplug the power adaptor. Let it sit for a few minutes. Now try the power adaptor alone. If this works, try shutting down and running on battery again.

Computer froze shut down by power button now will not start os lets me choose repair or start normally both tried just goes black screen then reboots over and over

Turn the computer on.
Press F8, repeatedly, until you see a start-up menu.
Choose "safe mode".

If it boots, open All Programs.
Open Accessories.
Open System Tools.
Open System Restore.
Select a date/time when your computer _was_ working correct, and go "back" to that checkpoint.

If that does not help, and it boots, use the Windows XP/Vista/7 "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" to create one file, holding all your E-mail, contacts, and music files.
Copy that file to an external disk-drive.

Then, take a deep breath, and reinstall Windows.
Reinstall MS Office.
Reinstall your anti-virus software.
Reinstall Adobe Reader.
Reinstall your other program.
Finally, reload from the external disk-drive.

I cant down load any games it opens an error blue screen and shuts down

Your Operating System has developed errors (corrupted).
This leads to the blue screen apearing when you try to perform some processes like downloading files, try to burn a CD/DVD.
You can solve this problem by reinstalling your service pack.
If you are using Windows XP, i recomend Service Pack 3, download from the link below:
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en

If this doesnt work, reinstall your Operating System. Remember to backup your data before OS installation.

I have a ML6230 Gateway and it keeps shutting down after a few minutes. Doesn't matter if it is running on the battery or AC. Changed power settings so it is not hibernating and the fan is running but...

Computer shutting off after a few seconds to a few minutes

This sounds like an auto shut-off signal given by the processor because of a possible over-heating issue. This usually happens when the laptop has been run for an extended time without having the dust, dirt and debris cleaned from its cooling vents and grills. After time, the thermal paste on the processor bakes under the extreme heat and starts to flake off and lose its efficiency at cooling the processor.
Get a few cans of compressed air that you would buy at an office supply store and using short bursts, blow out the dust and dirt from all the ventilation grills and vents first, make sure the laptop is powered down and battery removed. Then, open all the compartments and clean them out as well including the cd/dvd tray. There is a small black hole on the dvd bezel, just stick an open paperclip in it and it will pop the tray open. Blow a good blast in there to clean the dvd player.
There is the possibility that the thermal paste will have to be replaced, that means you need to gain access to the heatsink and remove from the processor, clean all the old thermal paste from it and apply a small thin layer of new paste to the top of the processor and replace the heatsink, securing it evenly with the attached screws.

I left my laptop idle and when I came back to it the screen is black and I am unable to shut it down manually. I can hear it running. It was making a noise from underneath near the fan yesterday.

It's most likely that some process has locked it up. Remove the power connection and pull the battery out for a few minutes. Replace the battery and power connection and you should be able to reboot.

Unfortunately, you may lose some work.
