Taking macro photos

when you use macro, you must stay really near the subject... so if you use the zoom to get closer, that want to say that the camera is too far, you may put it nearer and so, use less zoom, or get rid of the macro and only use the zoom (and you can move the camera to good distance) you'll get better results !

Have a Sony DCR-DVD108 DVD Handycam Camcorder with 40x Optical Zoom and wondering how to hook it up as a webcam

I guess my question to you, why would you want to use a DVD Handycam Camcorder with 40X Optical Zoom as a webcam? The optics on that camera are great and I would use the camera as intended. It would be bulky to mount and use as a webcam. Most webcams are mounted on the front of your monitor. It seems to me it would be easier to just pick up a webcam that is designed to sit on your monitor. Logitech makes some great ones.
Here is link: for some webcams.

Setting the ''digital Zoom''

The digital zoom works fine on mine. It sounds like your have encountered a couple of defective models.

However, even once you get the digital zoom to work, it gets really grainy, so I don't use it.

My zoom problem was a combination of the software and hardware when it came to the neutral position for the zoom slider. When the camera is first turned on, if the physical zoom slider (hardware) is in the neutral position (you are not touching it) the camera software does nothing, but if you are pushing the physical zoom slider when you turn on the camera, the software resets the "zero zoom" position into memory. The solution to my problem was to push and hold the physical zoom slider towards the wide position and the software realize reset the "zero zoom" neutral position. This may take a few tries to get it right (if you over compensate, do the opposite and push the slider towards "T" when you turn it on), but I hope this will solve your problem and save you a few bucks.
