Hello sir, i'm guessing the rope is broken , first you'll need a c-clamp large enough to clamp the spooler, needle-nose pliers,a small tipped screwdriver and a new length of rope.the safest way is to remove the rewind assembly cover leaving the spooler in place in its housing. try to remove the old rope with neddle nose pliers ans small tipped screwdriver.next hand spin the spooler to achieve spring tension until stops back off enough to line holes up, place c-clamp to hold it in place, now try to fish the new rope into the hole in the knot recess, trying to guide it to the exit hole in the cover, ( it's easier to feed the rope if you singe the end of the rope with a bic lighter and form to a point )and with a small knot at the other end, pull the rope all the way until you can seat the knot into the knot recess.next tie a loop knot into the other end of the rope,so the end wont be recoiled all the way into the housing.with tesion on the rope gently remove the c-clamp and let the rope be drawed in.if it draws all the way to the loop knot, check to see if the spooler is full if so,( not too full where rope is binding ) pull the rope about a foot and re clamp the spooler and install the pull handle, if rope is too long you may have to cut to length. if it doesn't draw all the way to the loop knot and the spooler is not full than you may need to add anoyher revolution to the spring tension in the same fashion as described above.there are eisier ways but that evolves removal of the spooler and repacking the reciol spring.( not for the novice ). hope this helps, thank you.

How do you replace starter spring on mcculloch 1.2 chain saw

If yours is not repairable, you can buy the whole starter housing , or just the starter parts to repair your starter assembly. The actual spring can be mounted on the starter spindle, and using strong clips, can be held in place or using vice grips to hold in place once the spring is tensioned , and in place. Then match the starter spindle over the spring. Next the starter rope, will have to rewind completely once it is installed back on the saw. If not, you can tension the spring by holding the rope at the starter spindle, and twist the starter spring about 4 to 5 complete revolutions clockwise, and then winding the rope on by releasing the spring . You can find videos on youtube and other online video services, to get a visual of what I described.

Starter cord replacement

Here are the basic steps:
Prepair the new starter rope (about 5 feet of good qualty starter rope size 5.5) by burning the end and shaping into a point and tie a temp knot on the other end. Use a rag to shape the end because it will be very hot. Remove the old rope and align the hole in the spool with the hole on the starter cover and practice incerting the rope thru the guide hole on the cover into hole on the spool . This will be the final action after you wind the spool. You should be able to hold the spool and insert the rope thru both holes and tie a knot while holding the spool in a wound state. Once you have mastered incerting the rope thru both holes and tying a knot you are ready. Now begin.
Wind the spool in the same direction that the spool turns when you pull the rope. You must wind in the correct direction or you may bend the spring out of shape. The spool will begin to tighten as you wind and will eventually stop turning when the spring is fully wound. Once fully wound unwind spool one full turn and stop when hole on spool aligns with hole in cover. Now insert rope as practiced thru both holes and tie knot with free hand or have helping hand. Once knot is tied slowly let spool take rope in untill no more will go in or you reach temp knot. Now tie pull handle and you are done. Good luck.

Return spring keeps on letting loose and doesn't work

Spring is broken. Sometimes hard to see. Hopefully is is at the end or close where the spring hooks to the housing. All you will have to do in that case is bend the spring and place back in slot. If broken in the middle, you will have to replace spring. Spring may be hard to find but you may find one on ebay or one of the saw forum sites. Just type McCulloch + the model no in google.
