We have a GE side by side refrig with icemaker and water dispenser. The water will dispense but the ice maker will not make ice. We moved and hooked it up and only get water in the door and no ice. I think the frig w bought is 1997 or 1998. Of course we can't find most of the manuals but their is a number on the back of the frig AF733687. How can we get the ice maker to make ice or can we have tips on troubleshooting.

Re: GE older ice maker won't make ice
Pull the cover of the front of the ice maker. there should be directions as to what way to turn the main gear (use a philips screw driver). advance the ice maker until it starts to run on its own. if water comes in at the end of the cycle then you need a new ice maker. if no water comes in check to make sure the fill tube is not frozen. if it is clear replace the water valve.

The water tube to the icemaker inside the refrig is frozen up. Thaw out with your hair dryer. To make sure the tube is clear. Shut of the water to the refrig, disconnect the inlet water line to the icemaker. Insert a flexable through the connector fitting, I used a zip tie. The flexable item should go all the way to the icemaker
Solution #2 Replace the "water inlet valve" at bottom back right of refrig. Easy To Do.
it sounds like your water valve is bad. you have a double water valve - one side operates the ice maker and the other side operates the water dispenser. the ice maker side of the valve is bad.
you can manually pour a little water in the ice maker ice mold and wait an hour or so - if it dumps the ice then you know for sure that the ice maker is cycling and water is not getting to the ice maker from the water valved
Chances are that one of the 2 valves in the assembly is bad. It is on the refrig in back, where the water supply line connects. remove the connector to the water dispenser valve (the other is for the icemaker) and connect a jumper power cord to it and then to the wall outlet, momentarily. If water comes out the dispenser, then the valve is good but the switch on the door is bad. If the valve does not hum, the valve is bad.
I have seen the water dispenser lines freeze in the back of the refrigerator, near the water cooling tank or coils, preventing dispensing of water.
Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then
try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell
you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.
The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice
maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear
it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube
it will freeze. You can take the water
line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.
Pour about 2/3 cup of water into icemaker . If it freezes and does not dump , replace the icemaker . Check to make sure the coils are clean of dust , lint , pet hair , etc . If it does dump , and does not refill with water , replace the water inlet valve ( piece behind refrig where the wall water line connects to on the fridge ) . Check to make sure the fill tube that fills the icemaker is not blocked with ice , still indicating a bad water inlet valve ( slow seep ) .
The same thing happened to me. If you pull the refrigerator out and remove the large silver panel, you will see the water lines on the left. The line going to the ice maker was fine, but the line going to the water dispenser was split. You may have the same issue.
PULL THE TUBE BEHIND THE ICEMAKER OUT AND SEE INSIDE IF IT IS FROZEN,IF NOT ALL THAT'S WRONG IS THE WATER INLET VALVE ON LOWER BACK OF FRIG.IS BAD,YOU HAVE A WATER DISPENSER HOSE ON ONE SIDE AND A ICEMAKER HOSE ON THE OTHER,THE ICE MAKER SIDE OF THE VALVE IS BAD,THANKS-MIKE
My icemaker stopped producing ice. We turned off the water line to it when we went on vacation for a week. We turned the water back on when we got home and since that time it won't produce ice. We can still get water from the door dispenser though.
