SOURCE: recovery mode

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

SOURCE: Sansa CLIP recovery mode - bad firmware update

Try the Sansa Recovery Tool

These are the most common methods for recovering Sandisk's Sansa Mp3 Players. I have been almost universally successful in recovering Sansa players using one or a combination of these methods. These methods do not work if you are having synchronization or music format issues - they are for recovering a player that will not power up, freezes, flashes, is not recognized by the computer, and a host of other issues.

Reset the Sansa Player first. On most models, restart is done by holding the power button in for 15 seconds or longer. Check your specific manual to be sure. The manuals are available from the Sansa website if they have been misplaced.
Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website.
Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/DriverDownload/driverList.asp
If these fail, then:
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
If you get the problem where MTP Device keeps popping up continuously, uninstall the “MTP Device” by going to Start à Control Panel àSystem à Hardware à Device Manager (you computer may vary slightly, depending on Windows Version).
You may have to restart your computer after each of these methods to get them to work properly. Disconnect your Sansa player BEFORE shutting down your computer.

Epson stylus workforce firmware problem

You have attempted to update your Epson product using the Epson Driver Update and Download Navigator software but have found that the product is stuck in Recovery Mode. This message is displayed on the product's LCD screen and you will be unable to perform any actions until this issue is resolved.
This error can occur if the firmware update procedure is interrupted, e.g. accidental powering off the product, cables being removed or the installation being cancelled.

SOLUTION:

The first method of resolving this problem is to wait for a few moments and a pop-up should appear on the computer screen, clicking on the link indicated below will direct you to a tool that will correct this issue.

In the event that the pop-up mentioned above does not automatically appear or has been accidentally cancelled, the Firmware Recovery Tool can be accessed manually. Follow the instructions below:
  1. Go to the Epson Support website and select your product using the drop-down lists presented.
  2. Click Drivers & Software.

  3. Firmware Recovery Tool will be listed, click direct download.

  4. Read the license agreement and tick the I have read and accept these license terms box and click proceed to download if you would like to continue.

  5. Once the download is complete, run the file as normal for your operating system and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.

My e260 is saying "load main image failed switch to recovery mode" what that means

Load main image failed, this is a firmware error, (this does not have software like a computer)

Recovery mode, the player tried to recover from the error.

The player has firmware updates that where put out by the MFG because of problems.

You have to read the manual, carefully and follow it to the T.
because you need to update the firmware on the player.

This is there website.

Stuck on recovery mode

you probably just to need to re-install/update the firmware. if you turn it on and just after the zen logo the little ahazard sign appears, it says something like "problem with firmware," that's your fix. the same thing happened to me when i followed what it said on the site to troubleshoot the display, but they're all assholes and instead of fixing it, murdered the player. oh, and be prepared to have everything on there erased. yeah, it sucks :-(
