Cpu at 100% ram hardy in use

Hi I bought this pc a while ago minus a hard drive and RAM.I have installed a seagate ATI 80g hard drive and 2 g of ram and installed a copy of XP Professional. I have down loaded the drivers for sound and network from the HP site and my Zone alarm virus guard. All seemed to be ok after install but now after running for a while I find the cpu is at 100% and the ram hardy used. The programs do load (word 6 and explorer) but so very slow. any help will be good. regards Mart.

You could always download process explorer here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653 and see WHAT is using all your cpu, you can also check your swap file and make sure it's not hideously low. right click my computer and go to performance, advanced, advanced again then uncheck let windows manage virtual memory, and make sure it's set to 3096 minimum and 4095 maximum. you should also make sure your ram is being recognized, maybe you put the wrong type of ram in the machine.

Testimonial: "Hello Joe, Many thanks for your input. I found the Swap file was set to 10xx to 10xx so set the figures to your recommended values and restarted, The improvement is amazing the processor is a 2.4g and the RAM is recognized as all OK 2g.I have down loaded and installed the process explorer but don't understand the info it gives apart from the top line reads "system idle process CPU 100 - Private bytes 0k - Working set 16k. As the PC seems to be running OK now I will leave it at that.Very many thanks for your knowledge Joe and best regards. Martin."

We bought Sims3 for PC but now someone tell me that we must have bought the Sims and Sims2 then it can be install on the PC. Is that true and if so where can we get install disk to go on.

Hi. Welcome to Fixya!
You don't need to install Sims 1 and Sims 2 to be able to install Sims 3 to your computer. For the expansion packs and stuff packs for Sims 3 you need to install first Sims 3 base game for it to work on your computer. However your computer must have the system requirements of Sims 3 to be able to run it properly. Here is the system requirements for Sims 3 :
FOR WINDOWS XP

* Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
* 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
* 1 GB RAM
* At least 6.5 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB additional space for custom content
* 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0

FOR WINDOWS VISTA
* Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)
* 2.4 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
* 1.5 GB RAM
* At least 6.5 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB additional space for custom content
* 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0

For computers using built-in graphics chipsets, the game requires at least:
* Intel Integrated Chipset, GMA X3000 or above.
* 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent
* 0.5 GB additional RAM

click start right click on my computer select properties you should how much ram you have installed and how much available it looks like it is capable of 4GB of ram remember when adding more ram try to keep the same brand/type as some motherboards will only work with the one type of ram together and always place the larger ram closest to the cpu central processing unit

The only thing i can suggest is remove one of your RAM sticks and see if the machine will boot. I had this problem with mine and it turned out that one of my RAM slots was faulty and would not boot if both RAM slots had RAM in them.

I want to upgrade my Evesham Axis 2600 with new motherboard & processor to speed things up? Any suggestions please?

Selecting your Motherboard is the most critical. CPU is Last except for Dual Core. If you are on a Budget, I have a rule of thumb: $100 for Motherboard, $100 for CPU, $75 for Hard Drive and $75 for Memory. Reccomend: NewEgg.com - Asus MB, Min 2.8mhz CPU, Ram over 4 can be a waste unless you are a power user. RAM wont help speed too much more, and a Seagate HD SATA 3.0 a Gig is plenty. Dont use your old hard drive except for the backup. Always be able to go back to your old system until you are done. Hansel and Gretel Rule !

Seagate 160GB SATA Hard Drive Installation.

Hi, Was the original 20Gb HD also a SATA or was it installed as an IDE? Try installing a fresh clean Windows rather than the restore disc. However, you will need the drivers for the SATA 160Gb and press F6 when Windows installers ask you to. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Hope this be of some idea/help. Good luck and kind regards.
