Sounds like you have a problem with the power supply module - this is known as an 'L'print and is located on the back of the machine - the 2-pin lead plugs directly into it. The socket into which the 2-pin lead plugs can be replaced separately. To remove the module, there's a single long screw that passes through it (a Torx 20 screw) - when you unscrew this, the module can be removed after unplugging the multiway cable on the inside. The power supply board ('L'-print) has to be unscrewed from the plastic case in which it is situated. Best if you get it looked at by a service agent if you're unsure.

Purring sound on Bernina 530

If it is the new Bernina 530 computerized model, they do make a particular sound when started up. My 440 makes a peculiar sound at startup, but I've become used to it. I believe part of it is setting the machine to the default settings, ie positioning the needle, etc.

Why does the built in light go out as soon as you start sewing and comes back on when you stop?

sounds like there is a short in the wiring somewhere in the machine, it would be a good idea to have it checked

With the bernina activa 230, it will randomly stop sewing so i have to switch it off and switch it back on again. But it keeps happening, how do i solve this?

Unfortunately this could be a number of reasons, ranging from simple to hard. Taking the simple first - make sure the 2-pin plug is properly inserted into the machine - if it stops, try wiggling the plug first to see if that 'resets' the machine. If it's OK, it might be the switch on the power supply - I've had a couple that needed replacing, but in all honesty, the problem is probably internal and could range from a poorly-inserted plug on the main control board, to a component problem on the board itself, which could be costly to replace. Is your machine still in warranty (2 years on electronic parts) - if-so, get it checked-out by your Bernina service agent, just in case ... dont go messing-about with the machine yourself. Before doing this ... check exactly what happens when it stops sewing ..... I assume that the foot controller doesn't make any difference ..... check if the sewing light is still on, or the display backlight, and is the display still showing any information, or has it gone blank ? Does it happen on all patterns - straight/zig-zag etc. or a memory pattern ? This may help to identify the likely cause.

General up-keep and maintenance for activia 140?

Clean, clean, clean the bobbin race area, oil the designated oiling spots (if there are any), and change the needle for each new project (or 6 hours of sewing). I'm not a Bernina user but have sold another swiss brand and in our training the need to clean and CHANGE THE NEEDLE was stressed heavily. Many users will leave the needle in place until it breaks, sewing through thick and thin, knits and wovens. And there is always going to be lint building up in the bobbin race area which will eventually "felt" up into a wad if left. Simple cleaning is lifting the needle plate, (or opening the front flap if front loading), removing the bobbin case, and brushing around the whole area carefully with a small soft bristled brush. Then oiling (with quality light machine oil), running gently for a few seconds unthreaded, then reassembling. Also wipe down the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth and clean between the tension disks by sliding a single layer of fabric into them.

Activia 130

Is the Activa a lower end machine? It sounds like it might simply need a service. The only time I have experieneced a machine refusing to sew when was it was gummed up with old oil and seized. Check all points of electricity when the cables plug in. It might sound obvious, but I've been caught out before :)
