Go to control panel>system>device manager and see if the cd/dvd drive is shown there. If it is click on the + sign, right click the drive and go to properties, click on update driver and see if this helps.

what happens when you try to update the drivers?

Why not try uninstalling the drives in device manager, reboot and let windows pick them back up as new hardware and they should then be installed automatically. To uninstall go back to device manager right click the device and click on uninstall.

I don't know how to download cd's and dvd's on dell EL-1210-09

What do you mean download cd's and dvd's? You don't download them, you simply put them in the drive and play them. If you purchased a music cd or a movie dvd that you want to play or watch, then just put it in the drive. The system will recognize it and automatically open Windows Media Player for you to play it or you can open it yourself if autoplay is not active.

Exactly what is it that you are trying to do?

If you are talking about putting a blank cd or dvd into the drive to copy music or a movie to it, that's another story and will take a while to explain. You will basically need to make sure your CD/DvD drive can burn CD's or Dvd's. Then you will need some type of burning software (later versions of Window Media Player will burn).

Click Start/My Computer and look at your devices. if your DvD/CD Drive is listed look for RW which means rewritable (it can burn or copy). If it say DVDrw it can read and write dvd's. If it says CDrw it can read and write cd's. You can also look on the drive door on the computer where you would place the cd or dvd. If it says Rewritable CDrw (it can write cd's) or DvDrw (it can write dvd's). If it says ROM (read only media), that means it can Read Only and not write.

If the drive is rewritable then the software such as Media Player will allow you to go find what you want to put on the cd or dvd. You have two ways of putting things in the software to burn or write. You can copy and paste, or you can drag and drop.

EMachines Desktop PC: when inserting a cd drive, nothing happens...

First thing to do is check whether your optical drive is visible in Device Manager:
Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage".
Click Device Manager, then look for a DVD/CD-ROM drives section on the right and expand it (click the plus).

If you dont see your optical drive listed there, or you don't have a DVD/CD-ROM drives section in Device Manager then your PC is not detecting the presence of the drive. In this case if it is a desktop PC you need to make sure both power and data cables are securely connected. If it is a laptop, you may need to just reseat the drive (due to its connector no longer making good contact with your mainboard). This would be a case of unscrewing the relevant screw underneath, pulling the device right out (possibly cleaning the contacts, if dusty), then pushing it back in firmly before putting that screw back in.

If on the other hand you DO have an entry in Device Manager for your drive but it has a yellow exclamation symbol next to it then that means there is a driver issue. This is commonly caused by uninstalling some particular cd burning software. It can be fixed by a simple registry edit...
Run Regedit (Start Menu->Run. Type "regedit", press Enter.)
go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Control \Class \{4D36E965..."
Delete the "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" entries. (These will get regenerated...)
Then reboot your computer. Hopefully problem solved.

When using the restore discs on my emachine w4682, restore freeze

In that case unfortunately, you are probably going to have to get a Windows DVD. Set the laptop to boot off DVD, and reformat and do a complete reinstall.

CDRW/DVD ROM Drive

I would suggest trying WinDVD and see if that works. If so, then yes, it would be a decoder issue.

G'luck

Hi,
First i need you to make sure that both the BIOS and the WINDOWS is detecting your drive as 'combo' drive. If not, your drive is not combo, it is CD drive only.
Because both rely on the product ID that is built into the Drive.

If u are confirmed of the fact that your drive is COMBO, then the problem might be with the laser.
Combo drives use separate laser beams for DVD and CD operations, and
it's possible for one (either one) to fail while the other is still
working. But it's more common for the DVD to fail while the CD still works.
You need to contact the service center with your drive ,if that is the case.
Hope my info is useful.

HP Pavilion Slimline s7400n PC

Hmm...Hope this works out !

Step1: Device Manager
Right Click on 'MyComputer' and click on Properties.Click on 'Hardware' and then Click on 'Device Manager'.

For the Category 'DVD-CD-Roms', click the plus sign and then the branch expands down..whatever is the name of the drive there, right click the name and click on uninstall..(If the category
'DVD-CD-Roms' is not there at all, you'll have to remove the drive off the system and put it back again and then try)...

Step 2: Registry

Click on Start->Run(Xp) or Start->StartSearch(Vista) and then
type in Regedit and hit enter..
The registry editor will open up. Click the + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, the branch will expand down..then click the + sign next to 'System' and then 'CurrentControlSet' and then 'Control' and then 'Class' and then click on the folder '4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318'....on the right side..find the enteries 'Upper Filters and Lower Filters' ...If they are found right click and delete them... and then restart your system. !!!!

Check now if the drive works !
If it doesnt then update the firmware of your cd-rom drive, If this still doesnt work..then iam afraid the drive is bad..(There is no need to Reinstall the O.S)

Note:Checking in BIOS & Device Manager for the hardware presence/detection of the drive is very important..If the drive is not getting detected in BIOS, then step 1 and 2 wont work...
Only Reseating the Drive might work!

Best Of Luck !

DVD/CDRW drive not recognising any DVD's

The Laser Light Reader is out of adjustmjent or is very dusty. Manufactures will not fix the problem if the product in out of warranty. Your only choice is to consider it a CD-RW reader/writer only or buy a new one.

Sorry.
