The coffee holder is just hanging in place, not secure against the seal as it should be. Make sure the coffee holder is secured flat up against the seal before turning the handle and locking it into place.

SOURCE: I have a Krups F880
I have just bought one as I had the same problem.
Go to http://www.werl.co.uk/index.php It is the official spares and repairs site used by KRUPS and the seal only costs £1.37 incl P&P. I thought I needed to pay with a unique kind of credit card, but it actually accepts all cards for payment as usual. It will take 2-3 days to arrive. : - )

There is an arm that drops back into place just before the plunger drops to pack the grounds. After the espresso is pulled the plunger comes back up and the arm moves forward and swipes the pellet into the pellet container. My thought is that the arm has come out of sync or become disconnected. The sound you are hearing could be the mechanism trying to push the arm forward but snapping off.
As for disassembling, there are directions dismantling the unit on other posts here (for 7240 or 7230), but the one thing that wasn't so clear to me is that the front facade isn't secured with any screws, but rather hooks that are part of the molded construction of the facing. Once you pull up on the facade about a half an inch, it should pop off. You can see some of the six hooks in the pic below.

I had the same problem .... My gasket split and I replaced it and water was still leaking past the gasket... Try this - Don't tighten the screen screw all the way...I have mine set at about 6 turns counterclockwise from fully tightened. Loosen the screen screw more if needed until the leaking stops... As a result, the gasket will sit lower and make a better seal with the portafilter lip.
