Question about Dell Inspiron 560 PC Desktop

I have a dell inspiron 560 with 6 wires from the front panel power switch. which wire is yhe positive for each set? the color for each set are as follows power switch colors are 1) blue and brown 2)power light red and a white 2) HDD led yellow and a black.

Led's only work one way, so it does'nt matter what colours they are. The led's that they connect to will only work when the plug is the correct way. You wont do any harm if they are wrong, you just turn them round. Plug them in one way and if the led for the hard drive does'nt come on then it's the other way. Same with the power light. The power switch when pressed just makes a momentary connection across 2 pins, so it does'nt matter which way, it's just like touching the pins quickly with a piece of metal.

The front of your computer is the Front Panel.
The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the main wires from the Front Panel go to, is the Front Panel header.

The Front Panel header is divided into two headers on the motherboard.
This you have stated, JFP1 and JFP2.
(Junction Front Panel 1, and Junction Front Panel 2)

JFP1 is for the Power On switch, HarDDrive activity LED, Reset Switch, and a two wire Power On LED.

JFP2 is for an internal speaker/buzzer, and a three wire Power On LED. (Dual color)

JFP1:
4 pins across the Top row.
5 pins across the Bottom row.

The pins on the Top row are numbered EVEN.
The pins on the Bottom row are numbered ODD.

Starting on the LEFT side coming across to the Right side, Top row;
Pins 2, 4, 6, and 8. There is NO pin 10.

Starting on the LEFT side coming across to the Right, Bottom row;
Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

A) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED.
Pin 1 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the HDD LED is dim when the Harddrive is active, switch the wires around.

B) Pins 5 and 7 are for a Reset switch, IF a Reset switch is used.

C) Pin 9 is N/C. Not Connected. It is reserved for the factory to use.

D) Pins 2 and 4 are for a two wire Power On LED.
Pin 2 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the PWR ON LED is dim when the computer is on, switch the wires around.

E) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch.
F) There is NO pin 10.

JFP2:

Let's look at a basic schematic of the motherboard for a Dell Inspiron 530s Desktop PC,

This is a basic view of the motherboard with No hardware components installed.
It is also how the motherboard sits in your computer.

Now, compare the Dell Support motherboard illustration, to the pictorial.
Looking to the far right in the illustration, the first connector is marked with the number 8.

On the pictorial it is the rectangular Black connector at the bottom/middle. (Next to the rectangular White connector)

This connector is for a Floppy Drive.
Is this the connector in question?

Is it the white rectangular connector next to it?
This connector is for the main power cable coming from the Power Supply.
In the illustration is is marked by the number 7.

This is a basic example, of the power cable coming from the Power Supply (power box), that connects to the white connector,

IF this connector on the motherboard is burnt, you may wish to stop.
Electricity has more than likely fried the entire motherboard. May also include the Processor, Ram Memory, Harddrive, and a graphics card, if installed.

I know. I'm a 'ray of sunshine'.

How could this connector be burnt?
Four ways I know of;

1) Lightning storm, or power outage. Also could have happened if the power utility company was doing some changes in the power lines, utility pole transformer, etc.
(No. The utility company cannot be held responsible. I don't agree with that)

2) Power cable was not plugged in tightly. Lock on side was not locked into place.
Air gap created in-between the connecting contacts in the power cable connector, and the motherboard connector, created resistance.

Resistance creates heat. Burnt connector/s will result, and perhaps worse.
{Could also create a small power surge }

3) At one time Dell was a Proprietary computer manufacturer.
This means Dell wanted THEIR replacement parts used on THEIR computers.

If an aftermarket computer component is installed, Dell cannot warranty their computer.
Using THEIR parts in THEIR computers, Dell could.
However Dell computer users did not wish to pay the price of the Dell replacement parts.
The aftermarket parts were cheaper, of good quality, and readily available.

If we use a Power Supply for an example;

Dell had the motherboard manufacturer switch the socket holes around, in the Motherboard connector, for the main power cable.

They also had the Power Supply manufacturer switch the pins around, in the 24-pin ATX main power cable's connector, to match.

The aftermarket power supply manufacturer built the power cables, and connectors, to follow industry standards. Dell did not.

This means if you plug an aftermarket power supply's main power cable, into a Dell motherboard that was built proprietary, the motherboard usually fried. The only sign may be a burnt connector on the motherboard.

Could also have fried the Processor, Ram Memory, Harddrive, optical drive/s, and a graphics card, IF installed.

[ Looking at the Playtool link again, look at the photo to the far right.
See the different colored wires?
The color coding indicates what the wire carries as far as Voltage, or if it is a Ground wire.

1) Orange insulated wires = 3.3 Volts
2) Red wires = 5 Volts
3) Yellow wires = 12 Volts
(All are DC. In comparison two D cell flashlight batteries produce 3 Volts DC)

4) The Black wires are Ground wires

(The Green wire is the Soft Power On wire. Abbreviated as PS_ON)

The Orange, Red, and Yellow wires are power wires.
The Black wires are Ground wires.
Guess what happens if a 12 Volt wire is connected to a Ground?
(Instead of going to a 12 Volt connection)

Things start frying.

{To state connections in the main power cable connector, and it's respective connector on the motherboard, correctly;

Looking at the middle photo you see the connection end of the main power cable.
Plastic connector with individual plastic rectangular shapes, that have metal 'tubes' inside each of them.

The motherboard connector has socket holes to match the individual plastic rectangular shapes.
Inside the socket holes are metal pins. Contact pins.
The contact pins go inside the metal 'tubes'.

The metal 'tube' is a Molex Socket Terminal,

4) IF the Power Supply, ( looking at it from the Back of the computer), has a rocker switch, or slide switch, to set the incoming AC power to 110 Volts, or 220 Volts;
And the power supply switch was set to 110, and plugged into 220 Volts,
the motherboard connector would fry.

Plus the Power Supply. May also of course include Processor, Ram Memory, Motherboard, Harddrive, optical drive/s, and graphics card IF installed.


Replace the connector? No
Could be;
A) Replace the Power Supply. Still no?
B) Replace the Motherboard. Still no?
C) Replace the Ram Memory. Still no?
D) Replace the Processor. Computer operates but no graphics?
E) Graphics card installed? Replace graphics card

Unless you can test each individual component, and the cost is not much less, or equal to a new computer, the obvious choice would be to purchase a new, or good used computer.

The Front Panel header is parallel to the bottom edge of the motherboard, and lays out horizontally.
Two rows of 10 pins. Total of 20 pins.

The Top row is numbered Evenly. Pins 2 through 20.

Pins 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20.

The Bottom row is numbered Odd. Pins 1 through 19.

Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19.


A) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch.
(If there is a Positive { + } wire it goes to Pin 6)


B) Pins 10 and 12 are not shown. No Pins 10 and 12.

Pins 14, 16, 18, and 20 are for an internal speaker.
This speaker is used for BIOS Beep Codes.


C) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED light.
The red LED that blinks when the harddrive is actively in use.

(Pin 1 is for the Positive wire { + }
If the LED light is dim when operating, switch the wires )


D) Pins 5 and 7 are for the Reset switch, IF used.
(You can go through Task Manager, and do the same thing.
OR you can also simultaneously press the CTRL, ALT, and DELete keys)


E) Pins 9 and 11 are for a Chassis Intrusion switch.

If the computer cover is removed there is no power to the motherboard.
This is IF a chassis intrusion switch is connected to these two pins.

It may have the style that the switch is in the open position, allowing No electricity to pass through to the motherboard, when the computer cover is removed.

Or it may have the style where the switch closes, and connects to Ground, when the computer cover is removed. Again no electricity is allowed to pass through to the motherboard.

Test to see which way works. Jumper wire across these two pins.
Default setting is probably nothing connected to these two pins.



F) No Pin 13

G) Pins 15, 17, and 19 are for the Power On LED light.

There are three pins for using a dual color LED light.

Pins 15 and 17 are for the Positive wires.
One pin goes to one color (Side) of the LED light, the other pin is connected to the other color (Side) of the LED light.

Pin 19 is for the Ground { - } wire.

Dual color LED lights were used if a computer had 'Turbo' mode. The computer was supposed to operate faster in Turbo mode.
In reality the computer operated at normal speed in Turbo mode, and lesser speed in the normal mode.

If your Power On LED light is a single color LED, connect the Positive { + } wire to Pin 15, and the Negative { - } wire to Pin 19.


As for the wires coming from the Front Panel, you'll have to trace them down to see what is what.
Power On switch wires, Power On LED wires, etc.

C) Pins 10 and 12 are not used. In fact there probably isn't any pins.

D) Pins 14, 16, 18, and 20 are used for an internal 'speaker'. The 'speaker' is used so you can hear any BIOS Error Codes. (The computers way of telling you something is wrong, and an area to look into for it)

E) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED light.
The LED light that blinks when the harddrive is active in use.
(Pin 1 is for the Positive wire)

F) Pins 5 and 7 are for a Reset switch, IF USED.

G) Pin 9 is NC. Not Connected


To Add:
1) If the Dell Dimension 4600 power on LED light has 3 wires, it is a dual color LED.
Only use two of the wires, and one color.
(Follow the wires to the LED light. One is a Ground wire { - }, and the other two are positive wires for the dual colors of the LED )

2) The Front USB headers are on Page 24

Make sure your Power Supply has a 4-pin ATX +12 volt power cable. Plugs into the square connector on the motherboard, to the bottom Left corner of the Processor socket.
It is power for the Processor.

CAUTION!!

For a time period Dell was really @nal about being a Proprietary computer manufacturer.
This means they wanted THEIR parts used in THEIR computers.
I don't know if your Dimension 4600 falls into this category, or not.

They switched the pins around in the ATX main power cable connector, on the motherboard.

Look at the connector that has 20 socket holes. (Two columns of 10 socket holes)

See how the power and color of the wires are labeled for each pin in the connector?

Orient the connector by the lock tab on the side of it. Now compare the color chart here for the wires in a standard 20-pin ATX main power cable,

A) Orange colored wires are 3.3 Volts

Guess what would happen if a 12 volt wire is connected to a pin that uses 3.3 Volts, or 5 Volts?

Guess what would happen if a 3.3 , 5, or 12 volt wire is plugged into a pin that is a Ground wire?
Same thing. Will fry the motherboard. Possibly the Processor, Ram Memory, Harddrive, and so on, also.

Check before you plug in, and turn the computer on.

The eMachines T3302 desktop computer, uses an FIC K8M-800M motherboard.
(First international Computer, Inc.)

Where those wires go on the motherboard, is termed a Front panel header.

The Front Panel is the plastic front bezel of your computer.
(Where the Power On button is, Power On LED light, and so on)

Looking at the motherboard with the Processor to the Top, Ram Memory slots to the Right, the Front Panel header is at the bottom right corner, and over to the left.

Look at the jumper block in the bottom right corner. Right in the corner.
This is the LED type selector, jumper block.
Has 6 pins.
3 across the Top, 3 across the Bottom.

(This jumper block is to set whether you are using a Power On LED light, that has Dual Colors, or a Single color.
The default setting of the jumper on the block, is set to use a Dual Color LED light, for the Power On LED)

Move to the left of this jumper block. The Front Panel header is to the left of this jumper block.

(FIC terms it a Front Panel Block Connector)

It should be White in color.
Is right against the bottom edge of the motherboard. (Parallel to the outside edge of the motherboard)

Has two rows of pins sticking up.
5 across the Top.
4 across the Bottom.

The pins are numbered from the Right, going towards the Left.

(From the Power On LED jumper block, towards the Front Panel header)

On the Top row going from Right, towards the Left,
Pins 1 ,3, 5, 7, and 9.

On the Bottom row going from the Right, towards the Left,
Pins 2, 4, 6, and 8.

A) Pins 1 and 3 are for the Power On LED light.
Pin 1 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
(Green)

B) Pins 5 and 7 are for the Power On switch.
Pin 5 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
(Black)

[Although it really doesn't matter which way the wires go. It's a SWITCH]

1) The 9-pin header you are referring to, is the Front Panel header.

(Processor to the top, Ram Memory slots to the right, the Front Panel header is at the bottom right corner on the motherboard)

The plastic piece on the front of your computer is the Front Panel.
(Sometimes referred to as a Bezel)

Make a drawing, and notes as to where the individual wires go from that Front Panel header plug, (One-piece plug), to the Front Panel.

Follow the wires from the plug to the Front Panel.

Mark down where Each wire goes.

You may have to take components off of the Front Panel, in order to see exactly where Each wire goes.

For example:
You may have to remove the Power On button/switch assembly from the Front Panel.

It may have the Power On LED light, Power On button, (Switch), and perhaps the HarDDrive LED activity light, in this assembly.

The wires are color coded.

Generally, but not always, when two wires are used in conjunction with each other, (Example, Power On switch, or Power On LED light), the wires will be twisted together.

One wires insulation may be of a solid color, and the other wire may be white, with a stripe in the color of the solid wire.

Example: Wire with Red color, and wire twisted with it may be White, with a Red stripe.

See if these two wires go to the Power On switch.
End of example.

Follow each twisted pair of wires back down to the Front Panel header plug.
(One-piece plug)

See which socket holes the individual wires go to.
Mark it down in your drawing, and notes.

Mark where the individual socket holes plug onto each pin, in that Front Panel header. (9-pin header)

When you are finished, you will have a pinout for the Front Panel header on the Asus M2N68-LA motherboard, and will know where the individual wires go from your ThermalTake V3 computer case.

For the LED lights there is a Positive pin, ( + ), and a Ground pin. (Power On LED, and Harddrive activity LED, for example)

(Ground. Also referred to as the Negative pin. ( - )
This is DC Voltage)

If you have the polarity backwards, (Positive wire of the LED light is going to the Ground pin, Ground wire of the LED light is going to the Positive pin), the LED light will be dim.

(When operating)
Switch the wires around.

The Wht/Blue wire is allways 12 volts; The Ylw/Red is switched only when the car key is on accessories.
