Question about Canon Digital Cameras

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Canon video camera (mini dv cassette) and a 2007 Macbook. With long-time intentions, I am finally getting around to connecting them, though when I did, the software included with the camera seemed to be out of date. I was hoping to easily download video into iMovie. Can it be simple? Do I need to get updated Canon software?

You don't specify which model you have, but all models produced in 2004 and later are compatible with Mac X OS 10 operating systems for downloading video. The software that came with the camcorder is primarily for downloading still images, not for video. Go to this link. In the first dropdown, select "Camcorders", and in the second select "MiniDV Camcorders". In the third dropdown, find and select your model and click on GO. In the seach window in the center of the screen type "mac compatibility" and click on Search. You will find several related documents which provide information on downloading video and other topics.

How can i download the contents of my mini tape onto the pc ?

you don't convert the files, you just downlod them via a firewire comnnection.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder....
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.
Open your editing program and choose the capture mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection....

thanks.

Final Cut Pro X Review-No Log and Capture or Log and Transfer?

The newly released Final Cut Pro X is now a hot topic, especially among the FCP 7 or 6 users. The UI of FCP X is different from the older versions. The style change is somewhat like how Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 differs from the older versions. In the other words, it is from grey to black. Of course, Adobe Premiere Pro is different form FCP.

How would FCP X change the video editing on Mac?

- No Log and Capture , Log and Transfer:
With FCP 7 or below, the Log and Capture option is to import tape-based videos, while the Log and Transfer option is for file-based camcorder videos. If you have mini-dv like Sony HDR-FX1S, you may need another tool to capture and save videos as a file, and then import to FCPX.

For videos from file-based camcorders, the process is like working with iMovie. The Camera Import window should pop up when camera is connected to Mac for you to select clips. Then click Import Selected, or the like button to load videos. Even though FCP X is supposed to import AVCHD files in .mts or .m2ts format, there are still users reporting the problem. If that is the case for you, you may need to transcode AVCHD to QuickTime MOV for FCP. Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac would help you make the videos compatible to FCP X.

If you use Canon XF100 to shoot videos in .mxf format, or other camcorders with MXF files, just try Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac to see if it works for your .mxf video footage.

- No transcoding to ProRes:
As it is known that the videos imported via Log and Transfer would be transcoded to Apple ProRes. User should wait for the transcoding before editing. It is said that Final Cut Pro X would grant you access to your material right away, saving a lot of time.

Actually, there is also timeline for editing in FCP X. But the layout is different from the previous versions. The audio would be snapped to the video. You may find out more interesting features and get used to it.

I have an HDR-FX1 hdv handycam. I have Final Cut Express Instaled however when I connect the firewire cable to my macbook Pro and the other end to my cam hdv/dv port I get a window saying the computer...

Try to install a driver for the HDR-FX1 hdv handycam from the manufacturer, and check the Apple site for any other drivers available for your machines.

Good luck to you.

There are lines across my screen, i think i openend the cassette door before i hit stop. now there are lines across the screen that won't go away. it is a canon and it takes mini dv's.

Your video heads are clogged or broken. Most likely if you will purchase a mini-dv head cleaning tape and use it, your problem will be solved.

Panasonic NV-GS10B mini DV camcorder. Cassette will not load into camcorder. Mechanism closes OK without cassette.

Seems to have been a random fault. Now OK, but for how long? This camcorder has given nothing but trouble. Any further nonesense and it will be destroyed.
