50" RCA DLP color wheel replacement procedure

I have a 50" RCA DLP with the model number HD50LPW62AYX2. I need to change the color wheel but cannot find any how-to's when I google it. Although, there seems to be a lot of info including how-to videos for Samsungs. I believe the color wheel part number I need is RCA 267888. Any information or pictures (depicting the location of the color wheel) you can give me would be greatly appreicated! Thank You!

Mine started to howl last year, I sprayed out the motor using carb cleaner / lubricant. Its been running fine for over a year since.

My guess is, the bushing gets plugged with dust particals. If you catch it as soon as it starts to squeek, the carb cleaner trick may work for you too.

Do you get to the color wheel through the front or back?

I bought a motor, but the noise was worse after I put the new motor on. Eventually, I found that the rotor (attached to the color wheel) had a bad spot inside it that was rubbing on the stator. The bad spot turned out to be chrome that was coming off, and a dimple was created, causing the rub. I scraped the spot of chrome off, and it is now working fine (at least for now).

Here is a company selling the RCA 267888 color wheel:

http://www.partstore.com/Part/Thomson/RCA/267888.aspx?s=froogle

Working on the RCA SCENIUM 50"DLP HDTV HD50LPW164 was easy. Access to the color wheel was not from the back. Taking off the screen revealed a plastic cover. Underneath, the wheel was easy to locate and remove.

FYI Clearly, the tiny motor that spins the wheel is not up to the task. Too many fail within 2 years, some less.

The bearing is just a bronze bushing. Once it has worn down, the wheel can vibrate and the squealing begins.

The motor is made by Delta. A company I have emailed who tell me I could buy from them. In the meantime I bought a motor from a company here in the US.

The motor looks exactly the same BUT how on earth one changes over the glass color wheel to the new motor is a mystery. I have emailed the company, TSM Inc. to ask them if they have the info. By selling the motor separately, I was led to believe it was possible to change over the color wheel.

Here is the motor I purchased:

Scroll down.

Hope the info helps!

Cheers,
Dave

    Well guys,

I just took a second look at the Tristate Module page I just posted.

Duh, it clearly shows where to insert a screwdiver blade. With a little more effort than I expected, the new rotor popped off the stator. I cleaned the spindle on the color wheel/rotor combo and inserted in to the new stator. I gave it a firm push together and it popped into place. Voila, perfect! No play and the wheel spins perfectly.

I'll be reinserting the color wheel unit tomorrow. A $50 fix! Can't beat that!

    Cheers guys,

    Dave

I had already bought the Delta motor from TSM before I found this site. $55 shipped, got it next day. Replacement was straightforward and fairly easy. Works great.

WHINING SOUND

More likely it is the color wheel this set uses---it is located inside the optical engine---part number for it:

267888This part is no longer available from RCA but is available on several sites on the internet (google the part number)

The wheel will when going bad sometimes make a fan like noise or even a high pitched whine.

Check out the sites on the net that sell this for price and decide if you want to attempt to replace it or if you have to have a shop do it for you.

Let me know if you have any questions or need advice.

How to replace rca color wheel

Its fairly easy. Remove the back of the TV. You'll need torx head screwdrivers as RCA uses them exclusively on their TVs. The color wheel is mounted on the light engine to the left of the lamp assembly and has three screws holding it in place. There are also two connectors which have to be undone. You may have to transfer them from the old to the new one. On rare occassions, an alignment of the wheel speed is necessary. If that's the case, you'll need to contact an RCA authorized service center to have this done.
