On the back of the drive there should be a black, white or yellow jumper. If you look very carfully at the back of the harddrive where the jumper is, it will tell you which position you need to have the jumper in for slave and which position you need to have it in for master. If it is already in the master position, carefully pull it out then push it back into the correct position to act as slave. Some hardrives simpley have a M for master and a S for slave while other harddrive will actually have the words. I hope this helps.

I have a maxtor 51536h3 harddrive, I need to know the jumper settings for running single as a master and slave to transfer the data to another harddrive. THANKS

If you have two hard drives on the same IDE cable, then set one as Master and the other as slave.Set which ever one has your operating system on it as the master (though it doesn't really matter). Once you get them both plugged in and your computer boots up. You should see both drives and can transfer data as you see fit.

I am installing a new WD3200AAJB HD in a Dell Dimension 4550. This is the only HD in the system. There are also 2 CD drives and a floppy drive. I used the jumper settings the drive came with which pins...

Reinstall your old hard drive as master and install the new hard drive as slave.

Here is the link to jumper settings from Westrn Digital;

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1540&p_created=#jumper

If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. Old maxtor harddrive

Most Maxtor Drives have jumper setting so that if "Jumper 50" is set; the two pins farthest from the power jack, is Master Drive. No pin jumper set, Slave or Cable Select. I hope this helps.
