Question about GE JVM1650 1000 Watts Microwave Oven

GE Microwave JVM1650 - not heating

I saw the Service Bulletin for my model JVM1650 ser# GZ built April 2000. I heard an arching sound for years and the other day it stopped heating, everything else works still but the humming is a little different. I believe it is a 9yr warrenty on the magnetron.

Is the service bulletin still in effect and do you know what the approximate cost would be through GE. There is a $70 service fee, I know. Will they change for the labor also? If so, do you have a approx cost estimate. It looks like they will not do a concession for anything so I'm just trying to see if I should just buy a new microwave since it's almost 9 years old. If it's more than half the cost of a new one it doesn't make sense to me to fix and I'd rather not spend $70 just to find it out.

thank you

If it's been arcing for years, I would suspect your waveguide is damaged and cannot be repaired in addition to the magnetron.

You would have to pay labor. It's generally about $75 to visit you and $90 to do the work.

GE Customer Service is here in case you want to see if they will cover labor or replace the oven, but I doubt it.

Good luck.

Our GE Spacemaker Microwave (Model No. JVM1650) intermittently kicks off while heating and resets itself so that we have to reenter the time and date. Is this a Magnatron failure?

Saw something like this happen when a magnetron gasket was bad and Rf energy was interfering with the control board. Could also be a connection problem in the power circuit, acting like it was unplugged momentarily. Heavy draw from the High Voltage circuit when in cook mde. Eric

Microwave not working

Sadly, we hear of this over and over.

This is due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.

If your magnetron was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or maybe the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched.

It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.

Details are in their bulletin here. Even if your model is not on the list, the same problem can occur, requiring a kit.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

They may send you a replacement magnetron. GE Customer Service is here.

The owner's manual will give you the warranty length. If you don't have yours, you can find it here: http://www.geappliances.com/shop/prts/

You really need to call GE on this. Only they can answer if they will still cover it. GE Answer Center -800-626-2005, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Otherwise, it may fall under your State's lemon laws. You can contact the Attorney General's office, usually via http://www.state.xx.us (where xx is your State's 2-letter abbreviation).

This sounds like the stirrer. If it sticks or stops, the microwaves can damage or destroy it. You may have a bad stirrer or magnetron. There is an important bulletin that covers these problems. To see if yours is covered, see: http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf If you need more help, please follow-up.

Chances are you have a magnetron that's failing. GE had a rash of "underperforming" magnetrons on these units. They replace the magnetron, stirrer and high-voltage diode at no charge for parts as long as a GE-authorized service center does the work. Sometimes the unit gets run too long in a failing state and the waveguide and chassis of the oven get damaged. The bulletin shows you where tyo check. To see if yours is covered, see this bulletin: http://www.microwavedisplay.com/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf Otherwise, you need to contact GE Customer Relations at 1-800-386-1215 as soon as possible and tell them your problem and they will put you in touch with a local authorized servicer.
