Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Open Question

Pinch rollers will not engage on Teac X10R and press the tape against the tape heads.

Press play and relay activates and pinch rollers do not move to press the tape against the heads and take up reel spins.

Sticky pinch roller was the answer. I removed capstan assembly and soaked it iin alcohol and then lubricated it with synthetic oil and it works good as new!

If the tape transport doesn't move up on play, but you can push it up and pull it down by hand, the grease on pivots is all dried up. you can take it apart and clean it. replace belt while your at it.

Teac x-1000r tape skewing off pinch roller

In the Teac X1000R this is most often caused by dirty Pinch Rollers and secondly bu a ring of oxide or a wear mark being developed into the capstan shaft. If cleaning the Pinch Rollers does not do it then a trip to the technician is required. These decks also have a touchy servo tension system that if upset can also contribute to the failure of this kind. I still work on these in Chicago area all the time. Russ the other ex-Teac guy is in New Jersey. Be careful of local shop with this model as many of them turn up the servo tension to resolve this problem which is the wrong thing to do that then burns out parts and the cost goes up. I have seen this mess many times as people bring me these decks as a last stop-- of course I fix then correctly with the use of the Tentelometer as is required. Pinch Rollers are often reconditioned with Naphtha after cleaning then with Denatured alcohol.

TEAC R-H300 Forward Play Fault

The unit need some work by a technician. The bad thing about the drawer type decks is that it makes it hard or impossible to clean the tape path. I have not seen one of these but I could probably fix it.
Some of your description sound like a loose capstan belt and then other times the Pinch roller is not engaging- they may be related if the mechanism is tied to the capstan motor system.

The tape plays songs so fast sounds like donald duck. The speed the tape is feeding is to fast.

Hi, the casette deck has a mechanical system (servo-driver) most of the problems that happen when in your case, plays song so fast is that you look at the pinch roller. The pinch roller is a rubberized free spinning wheel typically used to press magnetic tape against a capstan shaft in order to create friction necessary to drive the tape along the magnetic heads with a normal tape speed if the pinch roller brakes, get lost from his place or got dirty then you get this fast sounds play, check the pinch roller if still good in his place or clean his rubber with alcohol, then the problem should be fixed.

I have a Sony TC 630 Reel to Reel Stereo Tapecorder..Pinch Wheel is sticking and will only move when forced and brushes as well...Any help ?

Sounds to me like your Sony has a common problem among vintage reel tape decks..dried /frozen grease/ and or a lack of lubrication. carefully apply a tiny bit of fine lube oil, like 3in1, on the swing mechanism that carries the pinch roller...(you may have to remove the front metal deck face to fully access the swinging pinch roller mechanism) ) . do NOT get any oil on the rubber pinch roller..(best to make sure after by scrubbing the pinch roller surface with a cotton swab lightly dipped in non chemical household cleaner, like 409, or awesome orange i get at the dollar store. Then use the dry end of the swab to ensure the pinch roller is dry. .The pressure pads should swing upward and press the tape against the heads when in play/record mode..if they do not swing up, they are binding/ or out of adjustment....they are spring loaded so when the reel deck is in the stop position the spring loaded pressure pads are held down...play/record mode releases them to freely swing up and press on the tape against the heads.

Sounds like the pinch roller isn't engaging. The pinch roller is a black rubber wheel that presses against a silver post (capstan) the tape is held between them. With the door open and no tape press play. The roller and capstan should touch. If it recently ate a tape there could be some tape on the capstan that also will cause it to run fast.

A-7010 plays too fast Tom Jones sounds like Tiny Tim

This can occur when the heads are not 100% engaged and rather than the pinch roller pulling the tape at a constant rate, the tape is being pulled by the take-up side. Check to be sure that the heads are fully engaged. If not, then the belts may need to be changed.

Please post what you find.

Thanks,
Dan

I have TEAC A 4010. Motors are running, belts are ok, but tape does not turn. When I push on the capstan the tape wants to turn, but stops.

Ensure the rubber pinch roller presses the tape against the capstan drive shaft....ensure the capstan drive motor is turning..and the belt to the flywheel is snug, and not slipping. the tape transport engage relay might be stuck...a relay maybe corroded ...may need cleaning. Without seeing it cant say clearly what may be the problem. also ensure the tape tension/shut-off arm is under tension by tape that is correctly installed.
