a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

I too have the same problem. I've read many of the options and uninstalled drive etc but no success. The DVDs play perfectly, but put in a cd and its bump n grind and nothing happens.
Wondering .... I use the Russian MP3 music sites and burn mp3's to cd, could Sony have a DRM programme that shuts down their drives if you buy from such sites?
Ok Im clutching at straws

You can try with regedit
If your DVD drive is working fine, then it might be an issue within the OS itself
try these steps
, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

Tips for a great answer:

First, open the Device Manager and
uninstall the drive,. If you need instructions on how to open the
Manager, here is the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283658
Download and install CCleaner
(free) from Piriform
Run the cleaner to remove old
un-needed temp files
Select the StartUp tab and look
for any programs that you know you installed but no longer use or
need, and disable them. Caution, do not disable any system files
unless you absolutely know what they do and that you do not need
Run the Registry cleaner, when
asked if you want to backup the registry, select YES, and save to a
file you will remember just in case. I have used this program
hundreds of time on many different system and it has never caused a
problem, but you want to be safe, backup the Registry.
If asked about a particular file
that it wants to clean, select "yes to all"
CCleaner link -
Windows should reinstall the drive when
the computer boots back up.
If this does not resolve your problem,
try the following.
the Open Source DVD player VLC, a great player
you take all these step and you still can not play a CD/DVD, chances
are your CD/DVD componet needs to be replaced. Good Luck,
this helps resolve your issue, would you please rate the solution.
