Its one of three thing charger battery or d/c jack (the bit you plug the charger into on the laptop) which needs replacing cheapest option try another charger they have a pin in the end of the charger witch connects to the DC adapter after time this pin can be moved if the two do not connect the laptop will not recognise the charger as genuine and will refuse to charge the battery

Does my computer operate on batteries ?

If you're referring to a laptop, it should have a battery. If it shuts down when you unplug the power cord, the battery may be bad, not making good electrical contact or missing. There is usually an icon at the bottom of your screen that indicates if the battery is charging or being depleted.
If you're referring to a desktop - no battery.

Compac pasario c500 on/off light just blinks when I power on computer screen stays blank?

Shut down, unplug, remove battery, plug in, reboot. If it reboots, open Control Panel, Power Options, Advanced power settings, Change Sleep and Hibernate to Never. Adjust the settings to your preference. Set the Screen Saver time. When your laptop is not in use shut it down and unplug, this will prolong life and a reboot everyday will reset your laptop.

Dell Inspiron 6000 powers up, caps lock flashes 9 times, then laptop shut down. Why???

Unplug power cord from laptop, remove battery from laptop. Open memory access panel on the bottom of the laptop. Remove memory module(s) (SO-DIMM). Plug power cord back into laptop. Turn laptop on (with the memory removed), the caps lock and scroll lock LEDs light, then the laptop shuts itself off. Unplug power cord from the laptop. Reinstall the memory modules. Make sure they are seated correctly. Put the battery back in, plug the laptop back in, and power on. Laptop should power on and boot up properly.
May need to hold the power button down to get it to power on properly.

When l unplug ac adapter the tablet shuts down

Make sure that the battery on your laptop is properly seated. If it is then the laptop battery may not be able to hold a charge anymore. So when the power is disconnected the computer shuts down.

Try unplugging the laptop. Then once you've unplugged the laptop remove the battery. With the laptop unplugged and battery removed, hold the power button for 10 seconds. Replace the battery and the power cord and see if the computer boots.

I have an Aspire 7736Z-4809 and it seems that the battery isn't working. If I unplug the power strip the computer shuts off. Is this the battery or the settings or the plug? Any thoughts?

Unplug the laptop then remove the battery. Reseat the battery, plug the laptop back in. Then restart your laptop. Give it 5-10min to allow for a small charge and then remove your charger again. If the laptop shuts off immediately it is quite likely that your battery has failed. This is quite common for batteries. If you're under warranty please contact the manufacturer. Else you will likely find a cheaper battery solution on ebay. -Ravi Shanghavi
