Question about JVC AV-27720 27" TV

JVC AV-27720 TV Problem: Picture goes to horizonal white line in center.

First, a little background. This TV worked fine until cats used the TV top case as a launching point. The screen would compress, then it finally went to just a horizontal white line in the center. Note that before it went completely bad, I could press on the top case and cause the picture to go back to full size.

Upon disassembly, I noticed that the only thing the top case was pressing on was a grey cable that is routed around the picture tube and is terminated into a 2 pin connector on the main PCB. The cable does have creases where the case was pressing. If I disconnect the cable, nothing changes.

I'm an old electronics tech (i.e. rusty), and I don't have schematics. I can perform basic AC/DC voltage tests, but don't have a signal tester/Oscope.

I'd hate to throw this TV out! Can you provide any insights or instructions on how to troubleshoot?

Picture on my JVC AV 32120 is a little jumpy and has fine horizonal black lines going thru the picture. This happens if I use the cable connection or the RCA plugs connection. If I pound on the top of the...

This is an easy repair if you've ever soldered and would not be too costly for a repair shop to do it for you. The problem is a bad Vertical Output IC (usually mounted on an aluminum heat sink with the part on it labeled LA78?? ) and 1 or 2 bad capacitors. Some times you can even fix the problem by re-soldering the contacts of the IC- To find the IC follow the 4 wires that come from the Yoke (which is a contained coil of wires slipped over the neck of the picture tube(s)) back to the board. 2 of the wires go to the horizontal o/p and 2 to the Vertical o/p the thinner gauge wires are for the vertical. Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Sound is fine, picture not

You have a vertical deflecttion chip that is going bad. Probably a LA7832. There is also a good chance that you have a leaky capacitor and bad zener diode. The capacitor is east to get , the zener diode part # is MTZJ75. These repairs are usually best left to a professional

The only thing that happens is the red power light is flashing

The Vertical output ic is bad la7832 also has an open resistor in power supply off of pin 7 the ic.
Root cause is probably the zener diode next to the IC itself MTZJ75

White lines at top of av27230

Your posted description is a known (common) problem for the JAV-27230 and should be easily repaired. The vertical capacitor (C424 - 100uf/35V) needs to be replaced. It is relatively cheap and can be bought from any electronics parts store.

in some instances, it could be the vertical IC starting to fail or even a simple case of cold solder.

As always, extreme care when repairing the insides of a TV unit since HV can still be present even when off and unplug. A little knowledge of electronic components and use of a soldering iron should do just fine. Should you not be comfortable doing a DIY, then perhaps you can ask the assistance of a buddy who has some soldering experience.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

good luck and kind regards.
