not sure your model number is correct please check here is a manual for the 42 CL plasma TV http://www.hitachiserviceeu.com/scripts/userguide.php/CL42PD2100_EN.pdf if it is a different set please check the model number, this should have a 42 in it (as it is 42")

HDMI port damaged, mainboard need to be replaced.
But be absolute sure your HDMI port is not working properly, I recommed you try it again with another HDMI cable, you can also try same cable in another TV.

I know it Sounds silly I also have a Hitachi TV and got issues with HDMI, I unplugged from wall for 15mins and turn it back, then I tried my PS3 and worked.
If not there is a firmware update on the website however it needs to be uploaded by a "technician" via USB drive mine has a USB port but there is no update for mine.
Let me know if it works

Just look at the remote and find where is the TV/video and push it view the played DVD disc.
If it is not functioning try to reset the power of TV and DVD player.Unplug it and after 10 minutes to 20 minutes plug-in again and power it ON both DVD player and TV.
Thank you and good luck.
