Question about Sony BM-840T Desktop Cassette Transcriber / Recorder

Open Question

No sound from the external speaker.

When I listen to my tapes, I can only hear the dictation by using a headphone set. When I unplug the headphone set, there is no external sound. I generally don't like using the headphones since I listen to 10 hrs of transcription. Anybody, please advise??? Thanks so much.

When i put a tape in to transcribe it sounds garbled. Do you think it could use a cleaning?

1. Try to change the tape speed on your machine. Sometimes that will fix it.

2. Maybe the tape is just old (has been dictated on too many times) and in that case, have the person dictate on new tapes and discard the old ones. They dont last forever.

Hope I could help!

We have 6 month old Philips LFH9380s where the quality of recording has deteriorated - words are merging together and becoming unintelligble.

Unable to understand how to dictate and play back

It may seem too obvious, but make sure the volume control is turned up fully. If you do not hear a click through the loudspeaker when pressing the record button then either the 'speaker wire has broken or the 'speaker itself is dead. Parts are still available.

When boss dictates a letter I can barely hear any sound!

The tape might be getting old, replace it and see what happens.  If it is still acting up, It might be he is not recording properly or the recorder is bad.  Try talking directly into the mic and see if it is better.  If it is, he needs to talk louder or needs to hold it close.
