This is an ignition flame falure code. Could be you don't have gas getting to the pilot, no spark to ignite the pilot or your ignition is not reading the flame. Sorry to say but it's probally time to get the pool guy out to look at it. Good luck.

SOURCE: pentair pool heater has error
When I look at a Pentair manual that may or may not be the same model as yours it says in the Setup section that on power up "888" is displayed and then "---" is displayed. I assume this is to test all the segments of the display.
If you are seeing this symptom some other time than when powering up then there is probably something wrong with the power being supplied to you heater of something in the heater causing it to think it is powering up.
