Question about Whirlpool MH2155XP Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Microwave malfunction Microwave operation light and sound appear normal, but no cooking takes place. My microwave gave the appearance that it was working (lights and motor running) but it wouldn't heat anything. I took it to a repair shop (who had it for 9 months). When I first took it in, they said it was the magnetron tube and diode (which is what I found to be true on the internet). Since it took so long to fix, I started calling whirlpool daily. Now the repair place called and said they changed the magnetron tube and diode (which had a "bad spot" on it) but it didn't fix it so now they said the power transformer and capacitor need to be changed (for another couple hundred $$) - Does this sound correct?

Wow. A shocking tale...

It sounds to me like they're guessing ("shotgunning" as it's called) and don't have a clue how a microwave works or how to fix one.

They can't possibly be a Whirlpool-authorized service center can they?!

They apparently replaced two parts that did not fix it, so they should not charge you for those parts, or they should put your old parts back in. What are the odds they would have them still?

If you've not paid them any (or much) money, I would tell them to keep the oven and buy yourself a new one.

If you have paid them anything, I would insist on a full refund and your microwave back with all your original parts (if available).

If you hired someone to paint your house, and they only painted your window panes, should you pay them for the labor or the paint??

But to be honest, I would not trust this shop as far as I could thrown it. If you do get this oven out of the shop, the next servicer may find a whole lot of bad parts all of a sudden... Know what I mean?

If they give you any more trouble, I would go straight to your State Attorney General's Web site and file a complaint with their consumer protection division (or at least threaten the shop with this action).

A State government's Web site is at www.state.xx.us or www.xx.gov where xx is replaced with your Stat's official two-letter abbreviation.

Good luck.

Everything appears to be working with our microwave except it is not heating or cooking. All other functions appear to be o.k. I am not 100% sure of the model number and I'm not at my house to get that...

To allow us to help you effectively (at no charge), please post a NEW problem to FixYa, and please include your brand name and the full model number from the tag in or on the unit, your symptoms ("runs but no heat"), as well as the answers to these questions:

- When you try to microwave are the inside light, internal cooling fan and turntable all working?

- Is there any unusual noise or is it louder or quieter than normal?

(A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.)

We have a sound clip here of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

Microwave still continues after cooking time is ended

It is the fan. Im guessing it only happens on combination cook and not when you are only using the microwave setting. It happens because the oven is hot and it helps to cool it quicker. It is normal. The microwaves are not working and neither is the oven-just the fan.

this could be a diode between the capacitor and magnetron, (its like a fuse) i do not recommend self repair, but give you this info as a guide to what maybe wrong, microwaves contain high voltage and care should be used if you do attempt repair hope i have helped a little
