Question about Brother Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

Can I connect 2 computers sharing a KVM Switch to 1 USB printer?

I have 2 computers which share a KVM Switch. This means that only 1 computer at a time can be run, never both together as they use the same keyboard, mouse and monitor. Both can't be on at the same time. I have a USB Brother printer and I want to hook it up to both computers so whichever on is on, that computer can use it. The only thing I can think of at the moment is to keep unplugging it from one computer to another. Is there another way of doing it?

Please note that they are NOT networked. They are two separate stand alone computers that have to run separately using the same KVM, so there is no way that both can be on at once.

You need a USB printer share device such as this one http://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-2-Port-Printer-Sharing-GUB211/dp/B001SEB45M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328912939&sr=8-1

SOURCE: I have a Brother HL2070N

hi there,

Because printers and networks vary, the best instructions for setting up and networking your printer should be in its users manual. Also, your network-ready printer may have come with installation software that can help you share the printer over the network.

There are three main steps you need to take when networking a printer, including the following: Enable the File And Printer Sharing setting, Make the printer available to all users, and Direct PCs to the printer.

For detailed instructions on sharing printers at home, please refer to the "Get Your House In Order" article in the "See Also:" section below.

How to make mp760 wifi

This printer has only an USB connection that connects to your computer and cannot connect to wireless network directly. You can attach this printer to a wireless printer server/router to enable wireless printing.
OR
SET UP A SHARED NETWORK PRINTER
Any printer that is connected to a computer and is connected on a LAN can be configured so all other computers on the same network can print to this printer. This means the computer with the printer attached to it MUST be booted up at all times when other computers want to access the printer. You need to install the printer driver on the computer and configure it as a Shared printer. The other computers on the network need to add this printer to their computer. Follow these steps to set-up a shared network printer :- 1. Connect the printer to the computer and install the printer driver. 2. Open Printers and Faxes - right click on this printer and click Sharing - click Sharing tab and click Share this printer, and then if you wish you could change the Share name, then click OK 3. Right click on the printer - click Properties - click Print Test Page to confirm printer installation. Follow these steps to configure the computers on your network :- 1. Open Printers and Faxes - click Add a printer - Next - select a network printer, or a printer attached to another computer - Next. 2. Select Browser for a printer - Next 3. Click on and expand the Microsoft Windows Network down to the computer with the printer - Next 4. Select Yes for - Use this printer as the default printer - Next - Finish 5. Right click on the printer - click Properties - click Print Test Page to confirm printer installation.

How to change from 1 computer to another on using a printer

The KVM switch allows you to use one K(eyboard), one V(ideo screen), and one M(ouse) on two or more computers.

Note that there is no 'P' ("P is for Printer) in 'KVM'.

What you could do on the computer to which the printer is attached:
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Classic View
Click Printers
Right-mouse click on the printer, and choose "share this printer".

On the other computer (the printer-less one):
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Classic View
Click Printers
Click Add Printer
Choose "find networked printer".

Then, this computer can "print", via the network, to the "shared" printer.

Problem with KVM switch and Vista

Your problem has nothing to do with the Operating System (Vista), it has something to do with the brand of your computer. I have similar problem before, I have Vista (Dell), but the time I connected another Vista (Sony Vaio), everything worked correctly.

This is what you need to do:

1. You have to make sure that you are using a standard USB keyboard and mouse.

2. Connect first the keyboard and mouse directly to the Vista computer to see if the USB ports of your computer are working properly.

3. You may power cycle the KVM switch by disconnecting it from the computers (including the keyboard and mouse) and leave it disconnected for 2 minutes.

4. Reconnect everything after two minutes and then reboot the computers.

5. Try using different USB keyboard if problem exist after power cycling the KVM switch.
