SOURCE: need timing marks for a
Why the problems timing a zetec engine ,its so simple to do and throw the haynes manual in the bin ,wouldnt be to bad if it was written by a mechanic --- anyway these engine have a conical taper on the crank pulley so before you start remove the rocker cover and turn engine over by hand so the slots on the back of the camshaft ar at the bottom and in line with the head ,use a piece of metal straight edge to hold it all in place ,making sure no1 cylinder has the valves closed ,now remove the cam belt tensioner and remove the belt from cam gears ,now slacken the camshaft retaining caps so the cams are loose and all the valves are closed on all the cylinders ,Easy piece this and thats to remove the the lower pulley and to do this you put the socket on the middle nut and nice long bar and wedge it into the suspension somehow ,now crank the engine with the starter motor and this will slacken the pulley bolt ,remove the pulley and change the belt leaving it hanging ,now remove the metal plate on the bottom of the bellhousing and wedge it with a thick heavy screwdriver and get assistant to hold it in place ,now tighten the bottom pulley bolt to a minimum of 120 lbs using a couple of long extension bars and place a jack under the bar at the end to take the strain now with a nice big snap on tommy bay torque this bottom pulley bolt up and put a bar on the end for extra leverage if you not of the physical atire .Right next this toi remove a plug on no1 cylinder and find TDc with a nice long screwdriver ,now turn engine anticlockwise by the bottom pulley by about 30? so no pistons can hit the valves then tighten the cam caps down and make sure you then get the locating bar back into position to hold the cams in place ,bring the piston back up to TDC turning it clockwise and fit the belt .Job nearly done ,turn engine over 360? by hand to ensure the valves clear and then fit the covers back on and away you go
