Re: brother hl-1440 laser printer
Did you mean 'vertical' (from top to bottom) line rather than horizontal? If it goes 'straight down,' it has to be.
I think so, otherwise the added info that it is closer to the right wouldn't make sense.
This problem is normally due to contaminents on the surface of the drum itself although can also occur if a wire that discharges the excess toner from blank areas could be dirty.
Changing the drum cartridge will correct either of those problems since they are contained in the drum cartridge.
If you are using 'recharged' cartridges and it only has a few copies on it, most companies will exchange it for you.

It is most likely that your Laser Unit is failing. It could also be dirt on the electrodes of the drum unit and machine body or the ground terminal on the paper tray is bent. It is best that you visit you local Brother Authorized Service Center for additional help.

Seems like the drum needs changing. This is the most common cause for print problems in these printers. If using the high yield TN 6600 toner then you need to change the drum every 3-4 toners. If using the low yield TN 6300 toner then the drum will need replacing every 6-7 toners. Hope this helps
in laser printers, theres a charging corona wire that gives the paper a 600v positive charge which attracts the toner. once the paper hits the drum, a laser with a 600v negative charge is shot at the paper which discharges the paper and the toner isnt attracted to that area anymore.
either the laser is malfunctioning and not shooting a beam at the drum which would make all the toner go to the paper, or theres something wrong with the toner cartridge.
try going to the brother website and downloading the driver again (cheap and easy) and if that doesnt fix the problem, replace the cartridge, i know, not cheap. if neither fixes the problem, call the brother support line and see what they can do for you. maybe the warranty will cover the repair costs for you.
