Question about HP Pavilion ZV5000, ZV6000, ZX5000 Series 12 Cell Li-Ion Battery - DP390A (DP390A1) CD-ROM Drive
The problem maybe your antivirus software. I had Norton's antivirus and Internet Suite on my HP. My laptop slowed to a crawl up to a point that it took 15 minutes to bootup. I reinstalled Windows HP with the CDs that came with my machine. Now it works like a charm. The lesson is DON'T use Norton's software; it is know to use a lot of CPU power.

I had the very same solution on my Mother-in-laws machine. All the software and processes seemed fine so I opened the machine up and found that the radiators/fans were completely plugged with lint and dust. I blew out the crud with compressed air, reassembled and it now works like a champ. The P4 was known as a very hot processor and is apparently sensitive to overheating and kicks itself down.
Just Google "ZX5000 manual" and you'll find the disassembly procedure but basically you take out the six short screws around the fans and then the four long screws on the case edge and the cover pops off. Inside, each fan has a thin aluminum cover held on by two tiny screws. Pop those aluminum covers off and you can see first hand what your computer has been breathing in through the cooling vents. Blow with compressed air from the outside of the case towards the fans (you may want to go outside) and reassemble in reverse order. Good Luck!

At the least you need to open up the Task Manager and see what is taking up the most memory and cpu bandwith. You may have alot of key logger viruses and spyware on your machine that is also slowing you down.
What are you using in your Firewall to protect your equipment ? Are you on the Internet every day all day long ?
Have you eve used a program like Clean Up to blow out all the temporary files you get when you surf the Internet ??
When was the last time you did a disk defrag ??
