SOURCE: 39cc McCulloch chain saw
The issue sounds just like a carburetor problem. I had a saw that did the same exact thing, and found that I hadn't been adjusting the carburetor properly for years. I managed to find the instructions on-line, and then it ran like a dream, just every time I store it, I have to go back through the motions again.
Let me know if you need adjustment guidance and I will see if I can dig up anything.

This saw? Be kind to your elders.
The IPLs I’ve found for your saw don't show this detail. I suggest you try here:

There is a McCulloch thread. Your saw is held in high regard. I’m quite sure some of the members will be willing to post some close up photos of the set up on their saws. HTH

It must have spark, fuel and compression to run. Your task is to figure out which is missing.
Sometimes electrical components quit operating once beyond a certain temperature. Does it always start cold and become tempermental when warm?
IMO most hard start problems on a chainsaw with a good fuel delivery system are flooded.

Adjust the chain until you can pull on it and it will come away from the bar but will not hang from the bar. If that does not solve your problem then the chain or drive gear is worn out. If the oiler is not working it is for sure worn out.
