SOURCE: backlight or inverter

That would be the backlight. If it were an inverter issue then you wouldn't have any video at all.

SOURCE: LCD dim.

If you have replaced the screen and the inverter, about the only thing left is the flexible cable from the monitor to the video card. I take it that the Fn+F8 makes no difference?

SOURCE: HP DV1000 screen too dim

The 4 most common problems with dim lcd's on a laptop are boken screens, bad power inverter, bad florescent bulbs or a broken cable.

You can test the power inverter with a meter.

There should be 2 bulbs. If your screen is dim and your inverter is good and you can still make out what is on the screen, you probably have a bad bulb. If you can't determine which bulb is bad you'll have to replace both.

In my opinion, the easiest way to handle this is to replace the whole screen. Yes, it's more exspensive, but consider that it is most likely to fix your problem. A replacement screen comes with the power inverter, both bulbs, and the cable; already assembled and ready to install.

HP proBook 6440b laptop screen is dim on one half than the other half.

hi the problem with your screen is that their is a problem with back light at the other side, the problem either the inverter for back light or the back light itself is busted. as my recommendations if you don't mind if you don't have enough knowledge and tools just leave it to the pro so you can avoid major damage. hope this information can help you.

Evo N600C, display is 'dim' and mainly 'red'

There is one CCFL lamp on the bottom edge of the LCD screen.
You may have a faulty inverter or loose power inverter connection. OR
You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

HP dv9000 won't come out of black screen.

You could have a faulty video card, or a faulty inverter, (this supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp), or a faulty CCFL lamp.

Connect an external monitor to the laptop and power it up, if you see a clear image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.
