I have the Lexmark X4270 and I have been having problems with the phone part. Everytime I pick up the phone it makes a loud sound, like when you are trying to send a fax, both when I pick up a call or when I want to dial out. What can I do?

Make sure the that the fax line is working. To check, insert a telephone device straight to the fax line. You should get a dial tone.
Make sure the telephone cord from the phone jack in the wall is plugged into the Line port on the back of your Lexmark printer.
Assign the correct fax number on the printer.
If you have an answering machine connected to the same
line as the fax, set the answering machine to answer incoming calls before the printer does. Increase
the number of rings by a factor of 3 over the answering machine. For example, if the answering
machine is set to pick up on 4 rings, set the printer to pick up on 7 rings.
If you have a voicemail feature in the same line as the
fax, you may subscribe from your phone service provider for a distinctive ring
pattern feature. You can program your printer to have a distinctive ring
pattern and phone number for incoming faxes.
If these don't help, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.
Try to update your printer driver. Please visit the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/gKXn7F to download and install the printer driver for your Lexmark X4270. Select your operating system, download and execute the file.
there are fax/phone switch that you can use to connect the phone and fax machine to use a single line. price range from $46 and up.
that is probably the best solution, other than switch the line manually.
Have you tried to call out using the phone as a phone and not just faxing? Because the "unable to connect" voice is made by an operator or phone system, not your printer. Make sure that you are not running DSL over analog lines, on a digital phone system, or using IP phones. Fax machines will pick these high-frequency sounds up and it interferes with connectivity.
In the case of DSL at least I know there are line scrubbers you can buy. But in most cases the best bet is to run the FAX on a dedicated analog line.
